And if it had been an omnivore couple that was only feeding their baby regular low fat milk(not formula or breast milk, but regular milk you buy in the dairy section) and apple juice and the baby died, what would they deserve?

The parents of a baby that died of starvation after being fed a vegan diet have been found guilty of malice murder, felony murder and first degree cruelty to children.
Jade Sanders, 27, and Lamont Thomas, 31, will get an automatic life sentence for the death of their 6-week-old infant, Crown. After being fed a diet largely consisting of soy milk and apple juice, he weighed only 3 1/2 pounds when he died.

The Fulton County jury deliberated the case for about seven hours.
Prosecutors said it was a chilling case of murder by starvation, a painful and prolonged death. Attorneys representing Sanders and Thomas told jurors the first-time parents did the best they could while adhering to their vegan lifestyle. Vegans typically live free of animal products.
"They're not vegans, they're baby killers," Fulton prosecutor Mike Carlson told the jury Tuesday during his closing arguments.
The couple's attorneys said they didn't realize their baby, born at home, was in danger until minutes before he died.

gal_D: Well, gee, I think cow's milk is what you get when you buy regular LOW FAT milk...from the dairy section(if I had meant any other animal's milk, I would have said that animal's milk, but cows milk is the norm, so I didn't think I would have had to elaborate on that point). I said "low fat" because the health benefits from soy milk is partly because it is low fat, so I thought I'd keep it comparable.

how could they not know? 3 1/2 pounds? Are they blind?
this has been on the news that this couple starved to death a bunch of horses. She couldn't bare to sell them but didn't have food for them? so chose to watch them die.
whose fault was it? Sometimes loving something is letting it go. Those people didn't have the brains to raise a baby.
I know a lot of people who raise children and at that age don't give them a steak. My friend who was lactose intollerant said; He was raised on soy milk and his mom gave him cereal and fruit and made vegetable soup that she knew what was in it because of his alergies. Put it through the blender and he was a fat healthy baby. She was telling us that she didn't give her kids meat until they were a few years old. We were discussing this and several mothers said, We never gave our babies meat until they were two or three years old.
so vegetarian had nothing to do with it. They were like the couple with the horses just plain stupid.

When will ignorance stop being an acceptable excuse? They were 27 and 31, and in my opinion, past the age when ignorance is a valid argument. There is absolutely no reason for them to have been ignorant. It isn't that hard to figure out what a baby needs, just about every store that you would buy your own food at has a section just for babies, vegan or mainstream. And from some of the other posts I've seen, it says right on a container of soy milk that it isn't meant to be a substitute for what a baby would need if they aren't eating breast milk from their mother. There are soy formulas out there. Ignorance in a case like this is not a valid excuse.

(EDIT: Of course I think they should be punished and kept in some mental care facility for some amount of time, just not life in prison. That's a waste of resources - life in prison is meant for people who purposefully murder others, not people who are borderline mentally handicapped or crazy like these guys appear to be. A mental ward is a better fit, indefinitely or until they can get their heads on straight, if they even can. We also need to find out how they could possibly think they were feeding their baby correctly, so we can work to prevent this in other cases.)
I think they deserve at least the chance to rehabilitate themselves, to be educated and then released back into society when they're deemed fit to. Just based on what I've read and seen of them, they don't seem malicious, but instead very lacking in common sense. What went wrong with them? Were they not taught these basic things about parenting the rest of us seem to know? I just think the parents are teachable and saveable, not destined to rot in jail for the rest of their lives because of their tragic mistake based in ignorance.
And yes, if they were omnivore parents, I would feel exactly the same way and think they should be rehabilitated. Though I don't think it would have been as big in the media, because there are often cases of stupid parents starving their babies, but it's rightfully blamed on their extreme ignorance, not their personal diet.
littleviv2000 - I think you underestimate how stupid/crazy some people can be. But either of us could be right - none of us knows what was going on in their brains.

If they knew enough to birth at home, then they SHOULD have known enough to feed the baby.
This is horrible!!! Even if they were dirt poor you can pick up vegan baby books at the library!

So is it easier to believe that God just sat back and watched a defenseless child be murdered.
Or
That it was the karma of this child because of choices made in its past life.
