Alcohol can inhibit insulin production and usage. In a normal person, it probably wouldn't change blood sugar that much, but in a diabetic, it would raise it.

Alcohol tends to delay the metabolism of other sources of energy, which has two effects. The first is that if you have taken insulin or other treatments for diabetes, it may cause an initial drop in your blood sugar. But EVENTUALLY those other sources of energy will get metabolized, and four to six hours later you may see a spike in your blood sugar. Anything with calories will eventually cause a rise in blood sugar, the question is WHEN. So the diabetic who said it lowers it is right if the question is about the immediate effect, but the other folks, including the doctor, who said it causes a rise in blood sugar are right if you are asking about the effects over a longer time period. The problem with most endos and other doctors is that they are fundamentally like engineers who tell you how to make a watch when your question was what time is it.

Alcohol also inhibits your ability to tell if your blood sugar is changing. Be smart, don't drink if you have diabetes. You are just BEGGING for trouble.

I'm diabetic but rarely drink so I've never tested the effects myself, but, in classes I took at the local hospital, they told us alcholic beverages usually lower blood sugar levels BUT
it they are mixed with soda or juice (oj to make a screwdriver), it's the juice or mixer that makes blood sugar levels go up. That's generally speaking of course, and individual reactions could vary.

Alcohol LOWERS your blood sugar.
Always eat when drinking, keep it moderate and check your sugars often.

The people who claim alcohol raises blood sugar are wrong.Look it up anywhere and you will see.
