The light from Swarovski crystals is prismatic - it is almost like how a diamond seperates light into different colors. I have a Canon EOS, and have tried various manual settings, but can't seem to find the right combo. I don't know if I should be using a filter or a particular kind of lens or something.

In regards to dark fabric - unfortunately, the crystals are already affixed to light colored fabric. But the dark fabric comments at least tells me why this isn't working for me. I will have to get creative.. Thx for the answers so far.

I am really just guessing here, I have never photographed crystals, but do wedding ring shots from time to time.

You need a bright white light source, like they have in jewelry stores. Or you could try it outside in bright sun. I would use a dark background, unless you want to see rainbows reflected onto surfaces, in which case I would use white. Then play with the placement of light until you see the reflections you like. I would not use a filter. Definitely a tripod if you're using macro. (Even if you're not.)

Good luck!

I suggest using a single, small light source such as a small halogen lamp. Diffuse light sources or multiple light sources may cause some prismatic refractions, but they will be jumbled. I agree with the other poster to use dark backgrounds. Try setting up the crystal on a table in a dark room, then moving the light source around to catch the most refractions from the point of view of the camera. I also agree that you don't want filters.

Good luck!
