With modern handguns, indeed, firearms, accuracy is NOT a question. Most modern handguns are as accurate as the shooter. Pointing out a firearm's accuracy has become a cliché or line to sell a certain firearm. Truth to tell, they are all accurate. The cognoscente understand that accuracy is a function of many things, the most important factor being the shooter.

So that brings us to power. Of course, the Desert Eagle .50 Caliber Action Express has power to spare. Is it accurate? You bet! Can the average, uninitiated shooter shoot it accurately??? That is the question! Same with the behemoth, magnum revolvers.

Practically that brings us down to three or four choices, two (or three) in auto loaders and one in revolvers. Let's start with the revolver:

The .357 Magnum is not only accurate and powerful, it is considered THE best man stopper yet, with the better 125 grain hollowpoint magnum loads. THAT is my first choice in a defensive revolver.

The .10mm, particularly the Glock Model 20, is accurate and as powerful as you can find in a standard platform for a semi automatic. The key here is "standard platform." However, it is a bit bulky for some people. It is my first choice in a duty/defensive automatic. Here you have a load that is as 'powerful' at a hundred yards as the .45 acp (standard load) at the muzzle. The Glock holds 15 + 1 rounds to boot!

Next in power is the .357 Sig (the auto loader's answer to the .357 Magnum revolver cartridge). Is it accurate? Absolutely! Is it powerful? Sure, the question still is if it has done what it was designed to do? That is, does it really duplicate the performance of the .357 Revolver? Well... At least on paper, it does AND it holds more ammo than the standard revolver. It is plenty poweful, however the jury is still out on this one in the matter of duplicating the revolver round.

Finally, and probably the MOST practical, the famous .45 acp. Is it accurate? Absolutely. Is it practical? You bet! This is the one most shooters have NO trouble handling and available in many different configurations. Only problem is that it is early 20th Century technology. A FAT, slow moving bullet vs. modern hyper velocity rounds which penetrate barriers better (which is why the highway patrol dropped it in favor of the .357 Sig). It is still a good man stopper in as much as it punches a hole in its target the size of a US dime without the benefit of bullet expansion. My first choice in .45 acp??? Hard to say... I like the Glock, the Para and the H & K USP.

So, to answer your question: You have your choice: The .357 Magnum, the .10mm, the .357 Sig and the venerable .45 acp. They are ALL accurate. Powerwise I rank them in this order:

.10mm; .357 Magnum (revolver cartridge); .357 Sig; .45 acp.

Good luck.

If size is not an issue, any pump shotgun in 12 or 20 gauge with an 18-20" barrel. If you want something that you can store easier (I have small children) then I would go with a medium-large frame .357 magnum with fixed sights (Ruger GP100, S&W 620). These are selections for the homestead. For concealed carry, I would go with a 9mm mini-Glock or XD subcompact. In a revolevr I would pick an aluminum-frame .38 +P rated model (S&W or Taurus).

I love the 1911 (even have a tattoo of one) but only for recreational purposes. I do not look to my prized posessions for such work. I would pick a less than favorite for the specific task of security-preferably in a "unique" caliber that cannot chamber in my other guns.

incredibly there have been a number of ideas attainable. WW2 and Korea conflict produced a super form of people with firearm skills, as properly as a wealth of very much less extreme priced, and particularly functional surplus weapons. Colt, Smith and Wesson and others had a number of revolvers attainable, maximum chambered in .38 particular, yet a number of others have been usual as properly because of the fact the creation of the .357 magnum. The Colt variety 1911 .40 5 acp became usual with the ex-GI's, besides the undeniable fact that the Browning hi-power (9mm Parabelem) became reachable. Then there have been all the different surplus pistols from WW2, the German Luger (somewhat on the finicky area, yet attainable) and the P-38 (the two in 9mm) as properly because of the fact the Beretta (bear in mind james bond) and the British Weber (the .455 became an extremely function and frightening beast). besides the undeniable fact that, the secure practices subject concerns of 1955 are comparable to as we talk. Your character contains a pistol strictly to be armed in case he's shocked. If he knew he became going into hardship, then he'd arm himself with a shotgun for close variety stuff, a submachine gun (required a license, yet attainable) for firepower or a rifle for longer variety. back, surplus armed forces weapons could have been the weapons of determination as he could have gained education in that weapon (all of us became interior the draft and maximum men a minimum of went by using boot camp) as properly because it being a fee purchase (solid high quality/affordable). 2 undemanding weapons have been the Winchester variety 1897 trench gun (pump shotgun) and the M1- carbine, extraordinarily the parachute variety (folding cord inventory). a super form of the agricultural police officers additionally carried the .30-30 lever action rifle (that is what they had), the 1903 Springfield (precise, surplus), and there have been sooo many M1-Garands attainable (attainable by making use of armed forces surplus and shooter education) that is is a ask your self they are not nonetheless swamping the creditors industry to right answer your question, we would wish counsel relating to the character's history, his region, and how he could have evaluated the region.

I use a S&W model 686 revolver loaded with .38 special hollowpoints. The gun is extremely accurate with little recoil and packs plenty of knockdown power. I prefer revolvers over pistols because they don't jam. Are you willing to risk your life with something that may jam when you need it in a life and death situation? If so, use a .45acp pistol or 9mm pistol like most people use.

Your feet are always the best protection. But to humor you, get a shotgun with pistol grips for home defense, and a .45 with hollow points for personal carry. Glock has some nice sub-compacts. Kimber pro carry is another good one.

For home defence I take the trusty pump shot gun with buck shot followed by a slug. 4 carry I use my Taurus 608 357 mag ....plenty of take down power, plus it has an 8 shot cylinder....So i am not out gunned.....If you can't take care of the situation in 8 shots you most likely won't.....I just can't trust a semi-auto , have had kimber, ruger, and glock and the all jammed on my multiple times,...With my luck they wold jam on me when I needed them to save my life.....So I stick with the old main stay the wheel gun....

The Remington 870 Express with pistol grip and fore-end. With a tactical black finish and excellent fire power, this should keep you safe.

Nothing says "Leave me alone." like the distinct "Ch-chk" of loading a shotgun round into the chamber with the slide.
