In my view, prejudices come from fear to unknown, fear to something different that can affect you in a way you don't control. And this fear comes from ignorance so, it seems logical to think that, the most people and societies are educated, and thus tolerant and understanding, the less prejudices there will be.

In the Human race, the healthiest people are and have always been looked up to . In a job interview, if someone came in looking unhealthy, both physically, and mentally, I can almost predict that they have lost their opportunity for that job. In this situation, people are expected to accomplish certain tasks. This is in the workplace and in society. If you notice a person with Downs Syndrome, or one who is a little slow, ask yourself if you would invite this handicapped person to hang out with you this weekend, or go with you to a basketball game? Chances are that you won't , and that's because they may slow your timing down, or someone might see you with them.

Oftentimes, people with handicaps are discriminated against because people of average intellect want to show themselves that they are better than someone else. Also, people can just be mean and unaccepting. If you are different, then you are wrong and you get mocked for it. It's a messed up world.

Ignore the nasty folk! It's their problem, not yours. Be as good a person as you can and treat other people with respect. This self-esteem boost will make you a happy fulfilled person while those nasty-minded bigots are miserable and unfulfilled.

You win!

Er.... they ARE different. Don't get me wrong, I have some in my personal environment and love (some of) them. But they sure are different.
