Its true that .dat file is can be and video file (used for VCD) or a data file.
If you can play it on media player, than its a Video CD file
If you can't then it a data file. It can content binary or just text file. Dat file usually a binary file that we can't read it. It contain information for some applicartion to work. If you wanna open it, you can use text editor such as EditPlus or UltraEdit

Indeed, a file extension of .dat does not mean any specific kind of data. Any program could create and use a file of any kind (binary, text, etc.) and give it a .dat extension. If your computer is trying to open it with Corel, the file type of dat is probably set on your computer to be opened by default (example, if you just double click on the file) by Corel. That still does not mean that it is automatically a Corel file. While file extension names are tried to keep standard, the standard really only applies to (a) The operating system and (b) any program that was developed to adhere to those file type standards. I could write a program with my own internal database structure and call it mystuff.exe if I wanted to - Windows would just tell you it is not a valid executable if you tried to open it.

.dat could be anything - it's often used for general program-specific data. You can't really open it.

If you're referring to a winmail.dat file that you've received attached to an e-mail message, this is a special file created by Microsoft Outlook to encode the fonts and styles in the message. There are several programs that can decode it back into an e-mail - look for instance here: http://www.kopf.com.br/winmail/

hi there

a .DAT file is known as a data file. it contains data that may be veiwable to use in normal ways, like the other post, music, or you may use notepad to open the file.

most of the time, the file is encoded in such a way that we can not undestand the contents. this is to prevent the user, us, from editing the contents and stopping a peice of software working correctly.
