Well, I have been in Gilroy, "Garlic Capitol of the World", for 25 years. I have been all over the country and when I say I am from Gilroy most times people will say "Garlic". I have talked to people from around the world and they have heard of the Garlic Festival. We celebrate the "Stinking Rose" the last weekend of July and draw around 130,000 people over the 3 days.
Now for a bit of trivia. We grow almost no garlic here any more, used to be a lot. Most of the garlic is grown over in the valley and trucked here for processing.

Forgot this little tidbit. Mark Twain said that you could marinate a steak by hanging it out on a clothesline anywhere near downtown Gilroy.

I use to work in San Jose. The sweet smell of Garlic would drift in the wind all the way form Gilroy. They ahve the sweetest garlic in the world there...it is the best hands down.

I am from New York and I've never heard of garlic cultivation in NY. They do grow really good Macintosh apples and make some really good wine in upstate NY. Gilroy, Ca. has it hands down for garlic.
