President Nixon was the last President to give the military a real pay raise, 100%. The Military works 24/7, has no over time and they have to work holidays. If you were to break their salary down to an hourly rate, they get paid peanuts. They lay down their lives to protect this country but we can't pay them a better salary.

The military that collect food stamps, are those with no time in service and 2 or three children.

An E-5 with 3 children would not qualify for food stamps.

An E-4 with 2 children would not qualify for food stamps.

So your basically looking at E-1, E-2 and E-3's with multiple children who collect food stamps.

There used to be a time, when people made sure they could afford children, before they had them.

And you forgot, Reagan gave real pay raises, in his first 3 years. 7%, 11.7% and 14.3%.

EDIT :

I loved the previous post, he has Bush cutting the VA budget more than its ever been.....lol

In 1992 the VA budget was 37 billion dollars.
In 2001 the VA budget was 47 billion dollars,
in 2008 the VA budget was 88 billion dollars.

I wonder how you get a 100 billion dollars cut in there????

I am an E-7 and have been in for 11 years. I make about $70,000 per year and will retire at the age of 40. When calculating military pay, you have to consider not only the base pay rate but also the housing allowance, subsistance allowance, special duty pay, language pay, clothing allowance, travel pay, etc. If you apply yourself, you can do alright.

I have also been paid multiple enlistment/reenlistment bonuses. A $5,000 $10,000, and a $20,000 (this one was tax free, lump sum) totalling in $35,000 on top of my salary. I also own a house in San Diego which I rent out and one in Seattle which I live in. The nice thing is that uncle sam basically made my monthly payments on these.

I'm not saying you can get rich, like teachers, police officers and firefighters, we are public servants; however, I make far more than most of the people I went to highschool with.

Actually the pay is good and gets better the longer you are in.
E-4 with 4 years let's say is in Iraq
base pay= 1877.70 a month
+ tax free zone(Iraq)
Hazardous duty pay= roughly 250-500
Food allowance= 120-250
Thier are also many other factors included in to this
You can also consider in that if you pay rent you put in a request and the exact amount of your rent is added to your untaxable money
if you have dependents thier are possible pay bounses.
So really the pay is good if your smart about your money.
However like many have said no thier is no correct figure or no amount of money that would be considered fair wages for the work my brothers in arms do. However thier is the added bouns that you have the honor and privleage to be in the military; and the respect you get for wearing that uniform.

i'm a retired USAF MSgt, yet wasn't born at that rank. i became junior enlisted and by no skill had to have meals stamps yet ate a super form of Hamburger Helper once I have been given married. It became a good squeeze for years yet we've been given by making use of. i think of there must be a obligatory type on money administration for all junior enlisted troops, relatives making plans instructions, and so forth. many human beings do exactly not understand a thank you to deal with their money to commence with and as quickly as the babies commence coming alongside, the troops discover themselves in economic hardship actual speedy. The pay as we talk could be a lot extra advantageous than it became while i became in so there's no excuse for troops to be on meals stamps. that isn't the government's fault that some human beings do not understand a thank you to funds their money.

While I agree that our troops seem to be underpaid, there are other things to consider.

i served in the Air Force back in the 80s. I was paid about $800.00 a month, but I also paid no rent, had free medical care, had access to dinning halls for free meals, could go to the commissary to buy food at a greatly reduced price, go to the Base Exchange (Walmart like store} and get everything at a much lower price.

The military does offer a lot more benefits then just a paycheck..

Yes, they should be paid a lot more then they are, but how much should you be payed for laying you life on the line?

When I went on active duty back in 1975 the married sailors were given classes on how to file for and collect welfare benefits. Nothing's changed.

actually the republican congress gave the military a pretty good raise in the late 90's, and you could say the same thing about Policemen and firefighters? my husband just became an e-5 in the Air force and just bought a 2002 corvette, please don't feel bad for us

That seems to be an issue that has never been addressed!

I am more concerned that they still, after 4 years, do not have armored Humvees, and even though the VA Hospitals are treating 105,000 Iraqi Vets, bush is cutting their budget by 100 Billion so he can give tax cuts to the rich!

No one has EVER supported the troops! No One! It is all lip service. like some yellow magnetic ribbon you get at Walmart for $4.99, made in China, is supporting the troops. They aren't even doing that anymore. And I bet almost all of them will not be at a Memorial Day parade. They'll be having a cook out, getting drunk, while some kid, or several, just got wasted by an IED!

For as long as I have been on here I have not heard one Republican say that Bush's cut to VA Hospitals was wrong. NOT ONE! Yea, sure they support the troops! They support them coming home in body bags!
