I temp as a secretary and he calls now and again to check on my availability (I am registered with one or two other agencies too). I emailed him to say I'll be in touch again when I'm next free for work. His response was, "You only want to call to gloat". I didn't answer, but what did he mean by this?

It sounds like he was saying to you " you're keeping in work and that's good, you're phoning to tell me that I mustn't phone you because you're sooooo busy with work, Great". This person didn't mean it in a bad way. He was joking with you and he is pleased for you. In other words you're only phoning him to tell him you have work. He means nothing bad.
