Hi.
I'm 5'4" tall & weigh 153 pounds [11st 2"] & 52 years old.
I've bought a bicycle & have started to go out sometimes on it. My friend says if I could cycle about 15 miles a day [like build up to that amount] I could firm up my butt. Is that true & can cycling daily help to build muscles, if so, which muscles does cycling build up.
and how long would it take me?
Thankyou for help.

Cycling makes all the difference in the world. Just do it and you will see. Twelve to 15 miles is a very good work out and it would do you well to work up to that amount but you certainly do not have to cycle everyday . Two or 3 good rides a week will give your body a chance to rest between vigorous exercise. Yes it will firm the buttocks and strengthen your leg muscles(thighs), but the greatest muscle you'll strenghthen is your heart. It may take you a month or so to be able to work up to 15 miles but by 3months you will be a different person. And you really don't have to cycle everyday to get everyday benefit from it. The increased respiration you'll experience cycling will translate into increased ability to better use oxygen everyday of the week(= higher metabolism and weight loss!).

You can experience the greatest fitness of your life. It's win, win, win, absolutely no down side.

There is so much hope for you!

Great answers so far.

It is not only a matter of 15 miles or how many you do, it also has to do with the intensity o your cycling. A good pace or a hilly route will tire you up even in just a couple of miles.
Intensity is the key factor.

So ride at a pace you enjoy for most of the time. Occasionally, speed it up for a few minutes, get your heart rate up!, when needed, go back to a leisure enjoyable pace. You can switch back and forth as many times as you see fit. This will give you an extra work out and good conditioning in less time and miles.
Vary your routines and cycling pace. Some days do more distance at a slow pace, others do less but faster, and so on.
You do not need to cycle every day.

Stretch before and specially after you cycle it will take minutes and help you against fatigue.

I would add two days of some other form of exercise as a change in your routine. I would do some sit ups, light push ups, arm and back exercises. Nothing really hard, just enough to tone upper little the upper body and give those legs a rest to benefit from the cycling.

Most important of all, Enjoy !!!!!

Build Ripped Muscle Fast

cycling is a great cardiovascular exercise, also. Cycling will not build up your muscles, unless you constantly peddle uphill, thus applying weight. (your body weight versus the angle of the hill). Cycling will tone your legs and you will lose weight (depending on what you eat and how much) and your butt will firm up. Your calf muscles and the muscles around your knees will get the most work-out. You may want to start out easy, like 2 miles a day for a week or 2, then add another mile for 2- 3 weeks, then as your ride gets easier, add another mile. Over time, if you stick to it, you should see results in as little as 2 to 3 months, depending on how hard you ride (and how often). remember to keep your water bottle full and drink plenty of it, so you don't cramp up. Happy cycling!!

Yep. Shouldn't take you that long. However, to get the best results you will need to do cut a reasonable pace. Also, you will need to keep an eye on hydration - look at an isotonic drink - carb based. This will mean that you don't get into trouble.

To build muscle you need protien, but for quick access fuel you need sugar and carbs.

Right, thats the technical junk out of the way. Cycling daily will get you a better physique. Better muscle tone etc.

Luck

DON'T WORRY ABOUT HOW YOUR BUTT LOOKS!

That's not the point of cycling. A side effect, yes, but it's not why true cyclists ride.

We ride because we LOVE riding!

If you simply go out and explore, have fun and enjoy it enough to keep doing it, that's all anyone needs. Don't worry about hitting a mileage goal, just go out for an hour or maybe only 30 minutes and remember what it was like riding a bike as a kid.

You may be surprised to look in the mirror someday soon and be very happy with who you have become.

Great answers here and Id like to add: since I started cycling about 3 months ago (I ride 3 miles a day every day and about 12 extra miles twice a week) my energy levels are through the roof! I was pretty 'bouncy' before but now I have boundless energy. and I love my time on my bike, even on days like today when its soggy out. My bike gives me independence above anything else, as I dont have a car licence. I look forwrd to my 15min ride to and from work, and wouldnt go back to using the bus now. Enjoy yourself, thats the key. :O) xx
