I would suggest you take a friend with you (preferably one who has a child older than yours) to Baby's R Us and evaluate what they found useful and what they didn't. I bought so many things that "people" said I had to have but the bottom line is that most of the stuff they said I needed, I never used. My daughter was 12 months when I adopted her but I think the needs are the same.

I second whoever said that the changing table was not necessary. It was the one thing that I was told I should get and didn't and was so glad I did not spend the money on it.

For a 5 month old I would also highly recommend a baby swing. When your daughter needs some motion rather than sitting in a excersaucer or baby seat, the swing is a great diversion. You say I am adopting not we so I am assuming you may be single. I am a single mom and without a second pair of hands to entertain the wee one while you make dinner, clean or shower makes life difficult sometimes. I would definitely suggest the excersaucer and swing for that purpose.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! :D anyway dont waste your money on things you really dont need doll, for example a diaper changing table, that is a waste of money, you can always lay them on the bed to change their diaper but put a towel or something underneath just in case. Basically you need blankets, lots of diapers, bottles, a couple pacifiers, little baby nail clippers, baby body wash, wash cloths, lots of formula(the soy kind is the best) oh the baby is 5 months right? Baby food! you can buy the little jars or make your own at home, you can ask the pediatrician info about that. Snacks! lol mushy fruits, umm toys toys! always check if theyre age appropriate. You can also go to babys r us and just ask tons of questions, they also sometimes have classes for new parents. You need a stroller and a car seat, and a few other things...But last but not least LOTS OF LOVE <3 good luck!

Four years ago when I adopted my son, I went to the kid's boutique and told the salesgirl to pick everything that a baby would need. I selected almost all that she recommended. It always good for the baby to wear hand-me-down clothes because the material is softer on the skin. What is important is to nourish her properly - milk and food suitable for babies. Make sure you 'burp' her properly after every milk/meal before you lie her down - safety is more important. Make sure she is covered well to keep her warm and occasionaly to let her breathe the fresh air outside (if possible). Do not let her mucus or phlegm gets stuck in her nose - suck it yourself like you suck a straw. Do not feel dirty, she is your child anyway and it is better than have any equipment into her tiny nose or mouth.

Things are so easy to pick along the way when you are out at the supermart or somewhere. I would go crazy buying things for girls!

Congratulations and good luck!

Congratulations! My personal opinion is to go easy on stuff. You can always get it when you decide you need it.

So:
diapers
wipes
baby wash (I like Aveeno)
shampoo
clothes
sleepers
bottles
formula
car seat
stroller (or, preferably a baby sling or snuggli)
diaper bag
crib
Baby washclothes and towels (they're softer)

Things I don't think you need:
Diaper Genie--use shopping bags and take them out to trash
changing table
powder--not recommended as it's bad for baby's lungs
Dreft--unless she has really sensitive skin, just use yours
Walker--not good for development, saucers are better, the floor is the best

Of course, if you can afford the luxuries, I'm sure it makes it easier. We're on a tight budget, so basically got by with necessities. Again, congratulations!

Your parenting style should also be considered as well as possible transition issues due to her not being a newborn. We do attachment parenting, if you're interested in that you may want to consider a co-sleeper rather than a crib as well as some kind of sling or wrap for baby wearing. We also prefer all-in-one cloth diapers and instead of wipes with lots of chemicals use just washcloths and warm water...this is too granola for some, but just giving examples of how your personal style will determine your needs.

At 5 mos, she will have begun making bonds to her caretakers, developing preferences and getting used to routines, so find out everything you can about the home she is coming from and her current routines. You might consider using the same diapers, detergent, and formula for awhile and slowly switch to your preferred brands to make her transition less shocking. Is she used to being rocked to sleep? Our rocking chair has definitely been a "must have" item for our son.

Also try to get her medical history...is she developmentally on target, advanced, or possibly delayed? Knowing this will help you determine the toys and such to buy her as you may need to adjust "age appropriateness" to her developmental level instead of chronological age.

Congrats and best of luck! Feel free to email me through my profile if you'd like to discuss anything.

If they have a Babies R Us by you go there. They are so organized and prepared. They have a list of things you need to start a new family/nursery. You can go on line and check it out as well. I think they have the same options on line as they do in the store.
