Yes, the key will create a snapshot of the entire screen. What's more (something the other posters do not seem to know), at times you only need a screen shot of a single window...
Select a window and press & hold the right button. Then, while doing that, press the key. This will copy an image of the selected window. Very handy.
After that, you can paste it anywhere you want (well, anywhere is a big word). I tend to use IrfanView to past my screenshots and modify them a bit (e.g. cropping) before saving them to a folder. Download IrfanView @ http://www.irfanview.com/
IrfanView is one of the most powerful viewers around. And it's free to download & use.

press and hold the alt key, then press the prtscr button. This copies an image to the clipboard. Now just paste that into a document. To make a jpeg, right click on the pasted image and select "save image as".

You shouldn't have to hit cnrtl, just press the print screen button, and like the last guy said, save it into the Paint program. It's very easy.

Hit the "Print Screen" button on your keyboard. Then open up Microsoft Paint from the Accessories tab under your Start bar and after it opens hit "ctrl v" to paste it into the window. Then you can save it as whatever you want.

If you press the PrintScrn button, it will take a snapshot of your desktop and place it on your clipboard. You can then past it into any software that you like to use to edit and save as a jpg - such as Paint.
Also, if you use Alt + PrintScrn it will do the same thing but only for the currently active window.
