Hey,
some of these answers are a bit misleading. An hour to ride 30 miles on a mountain bike. You have got to be joking! Thats about 45+km/h - that is the speed of the professional peleton!!
I would say that you would need to allow at least 1 1/2 hours, and that's if it is a flat road. That would be an average of around 20 mph. Which is more realistic!
If you can do it in 45 minutes, you should get a contract with a professional cycling team!

I just left a job recently that was 25 miles one way with a few moderate hills and quite a number of stoplights. I use a titanium road bike with heavier 'training' wheels and high pressure tires. The bike weighs about 20 pounds with a full water bottle. I generally completed the trip in about 1:20. I'm considered to be quite fit, and race 4-6 times a month in the open masters category. I would never make the full round trip to an from work more than 3 times a week, less if I was racing on the weekend.
On an MTB even with good road tires, if you can make an average of 15 miles an hour for the trip, you're really crankin'. I would allow 2 hours. Also, that's a sh*tload of work to do _every_ day, especially for a guy of your size if you're not already quite fit. By the time you get to work, you'll be whipped.
Here's some advice: Find a spot about ten miles from work where you can leave your car, and ride in from there. It will save you from driving 100 miles a week if you do it every day (~5 gallons of gas?) and it will give you a good idea of what commuting is really like without completely wiping you out.

You'll only do that if it's a steep downhill both ways! Seriously, a 30mph average is Tour de France caliber speed!
I'd estimate closer to 2.5 to 3 hours, given a 10-12mph average. I ride to work once or twice a week, and it's only 10 miles but I have to go over a local mountain no matter what. It takes me about 35 minutes, on a road bike, with 17 years riding experience.
If you want to go faster, get a road bike; they are unequaled on pavement. Good luck!

I have a 20-mile one way commute too work, which I do on an old mountain bike with slick tires and bigger gears. I'm a reasonably fit and experienced cyclist, and I budget just over an hour and a half for my ride to work.
If I were you I'd figure on two hours, minimum -- I would also try the ride a few times before doing it as a commute, to get a more accurate feel for your pace and timing.
If you're riding to work, you have to consider how sweaty (do they have showers at work?), and tired, you want to be when you arrive, before deciding how hard to push yourself. Your time will no doubt improve if you ride often enough, but the best advice for improving speed right away is to put slick tires on your bike.

I would estimate 1 1/2 hours on your first ride. Change out your tires to a 1 1/8 slick or semi slick if you do not go onto any dirt trails. The tires will make you go a little bit faster on the roadway. Hope this helps a little.

Firstly, put road tyres on your bike. This will help with speed, along with a higher tyre pressure. I would also fit spd s for general riding.
Secondly, your way off. 25mph is a cracking pace for mountain bikes. I would look at about 2 hrs. Try it one weekend and see. I usually ride 20 mile routes. XC takes about 2 hrs. For road, I can manage it in just over an hour (XC tyres).
Luck

lets use the larger figure of 30miles. if you traveled on average of 10mph (if you are not quite fit), it would take you 3 hours. if its easy terrain and you can move about 20mph, then you could get there theoretically in about 1.5hours.
