No, it's not. Belief in the divine is completely unnecessary.

And I find it somewhat unsettling that you have the same name as I.

I /am/ a badass. How'd you know?

Man cannot attain to his true humanity and acquire peace of mind unless he realises this aim for which he was created. But how can he do this! God, being merciful and Just, has helped him in many ways. He granted him an originally good nature that is inclined to know and serve its true Lord. He granted him a mind that possesses a moral sense and the ability to reason. He made the whole universe a natural book full of signs that lead a thinking person to God. But to make things more specific, to give him more detailed knowledge of his Lord, and to show him in a more detailed manner how to serve Him, God has been sending down verbal messages through His prophets chosen from among men, ever since the creation of man.

Well from a personal view, yeah for me it is...my thinking is how were we created? How did the sky and sun and moon and animals and plants come to be? That is what made me think there must ne something greater out there and made me believe in a higher being and go on to explore other religions and the one that made the most sense to me is Islam cos it a logical religion. Belief in a God makes me feel complete which before I was feeling aimless and full of questions and self-doubt about my existence here on this Earth as I have been through very trying times and have thought of committing suicide before and religion has saved me to be honest and I feel more complete and sure and confident. It is a wonderful feeling trust me. That is just for me.

For you, if you are curious about God, go around exploring the different religions out there and make your own decision from the knowledge you have gained. If you still dun see the logic in a belief in God, then as long as you respect other people, have good morals and values and do not commit crimes and are contented with who you are, it is all good.

For me, I chose Islam because of the simple belief in one God. There is no need to 'see' Him when His signs are already obvious for us to believe in Him. Signs of the day and night, the birth of a baby and all things in nature. For me, praying to a statue does not make sense as statues are man-made and why should we be praying to something man-made which in turn is like praying to ourselves??That is just one of the few reasons why.

I will preach no more and let you just think and ponder for yourself.

lol like the extra detail

no, it is not necessary. I live a perfectly happy average life without believing in God, Heaven, Hell, miracles, and the like. There's no need to; the world would be a much better place if people acted righteously for themselves and others, and not just because some religious idol told them to. that is bribery, a despicable thing to me. now I am a Unitarian Universalist (a mouthfull, I know :D), and we allow people to believe as they choose using several principles and teachings as guidelines. Muslims, Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Seiks, they all have members in UU congregations, and they find it more fulfilling than in their own churches. we don't force people to follow an ancient, unconditional tome, we rather encourage them to explore that tome, decide what is right for you yourself, and move on. there's more, but I can't type it all down lol.

People have a natural need to belong to a group. Very few people are comfortable with being alone, or considered an outsider. Religion is much like a sorority, or club. It makes you feel good and included. Is it necessary for life...not really. If you have no social skills and need to feel included, then there you go...friends on sunday is there for you. My problem with this is that these friends on sunday claim to be "good" people...but is it by definition good to hate gay people? Is it good to say you will go to a place called hell if you don't think like me? Why can't a person be good and do it because it just feels right? Does it make sense that you should shame people from birth by saying they are inherant sinners? Why not just say they are human and will make mistakes, and will do good too. God is very man made and used to anser questions no one could answer 2000 years ago...luckily we can answer most now and we don't need this "civilization for dummies" book anymore.

According to Him it is. Check this out:

"without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists" (Hebrews 11:5).

Concerning those that do not believe, the Bible says this:

"the fool says in his heart, 'There is no God'" (Psalm 53:1).

I would say that God has expressed His opinion on the matter, and if it is true that He is there having an opinion, then it would be the smart thing to get to know Him, since eternity is at stake.

Necessary for what? Breathing? Recieving eternal salvation? Living the happiest and best life possible? I'd say He's necessary for at least 2 of those.

If some people didn't believe in extra-terrestrial life we would have no radio telescopes and no probes and messages in space.

All to say that you are not likely to make contact with anything you cannot conceive of or don't believe in. "He that comes to God must believe that he is and that he is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him."

Sounds reasonable enough and works for me. Then I find people who complain that we just do it for rewards!!!

My only question to you is....necessary in what sense? No, you do not have to believe in God. No one can force you to believe. It is a personal choice at the very beginning of faith...but once you are committed to God, your faith turns into absolute personal knowledge because the Holy Spirit of God/Jesus comes to live within the believer. I can't prove it to you any more than you could prove the opposite to me.

I believe in God. But I don't believe in myself. Not believing in myself but believing in God makes me feel like a damn hypocrite. Is it necessary? There is no "yes" or "no" answer to your question, I can't give you a straight answer but I don't feel like writing my point right now.

I use to not believe in Him. I was a horrible drug addict, and now I have an illness. Is it necessary, no.
Do want a connection with your soul, then yes.
To forsake Him is to live without Him, and that is living in Hell, trust me, I was there, and it is not good. Believe in Him and you will have a true ally and friend that will not judge you or lie to you, and He will help you. Talk to Him as I do, when you going to sleep, in your head, and He will answer you, believe me. I am not a religious fanatic and do not attend any kind of church, however, I do pray to Him.
I learned the truth when I went through withdraw, for He was there with me, I promise you.
He told me that I was forgiven for forsaking Him and for what I had done to myself. HE picked me up to my feet, and I was in His presence, so is it necessary to believe in Him, Yes it is if you want everlasting life in His light.
