He is eating dry puppy food and then once in a while i see it thrown up somewhere else. this doesnt happen often (maybe once a week?) but when it does its not that liquid-y and somewhat solid. He then tries to eat it up again. is this normal?

My dog is litter box trained and when he was a puppy he used to eat the wood pellets.. and then vomit. Took him about a month before he grew out of that. And yes, he used to try and eat it. He also used to throw up if he ate too fast. Maybe try parsing out your dog's food into smaller portions.

If he's been doing this for a while I'd take him to the vet. He's still really young so maybe wait a couple more weeks before going if he's otherwise healthy and gaining weight.

No, it's not normal. Take it to the vet make sure he doesn't have some kind of worms.

I couldn't find your question but just follow the vet's advice. sounds like he/she knows what she/he is talking about.
