The bride said the wedding is casual and to wear something like a sundress - I have shopped till I dropped, and I can't find a sundress that looks good on me. The only dress that I have is black (very cute), and the wedding is on Saturday on a yacht off the coast of Cali. If I dressed it up with a turqoise handbag and pumps, would I be okay?

I chickened out after some of the responses I received and opted for a less-than-flattering floral print dress that I borrowed from a friend. I wish I had never listened to the people who said NOT to wear black. Over 50% of the guests were wearing black. I felt so uncomfortable in my ugly pink dress the entire day. If you are reading this, and you are contemplating wearing black, DO IT! Don't listen to the negative people who tell you otherwise. Thank you to everyone who told me to wear the black dress. I should have listened to you!!!!!

Since the wedding is going to be casual, ur black dress will work if it`s a linen or cotton material and dress it down not up.
I think the turquoise handbag and pumps might be a bit over the top for a casual yacht wedding. A neutral color sandal or wedgies and a small shoulder bag is more in keeping with the casual look.

Well, the wedding sounds pretty ritzy, so I am guessing the black dress it cocktail-appropriate, and that means it would be appropriate for this wedding, too. Don't worry about all the silly sayings that you shouldn't wear black to a wedding. The only color you shouldn't wear is white! I do, however, think adding the turquoise is a must. Maybe you could consider finding a wrap or shrug in the same color just to add a little something to you outfit.

I've read that only the mother of the bride (or groom) should not wear red, black or white. Anything goes for all other guests. Since the bride suggested a sundress, your cute black dress would probably be fine if it's cotton, linen or some blend of those fibers.

You should not wear a white, red, or black dress, as a guest at a wedding.

Although the "younger generation" will probably not notice or care, the other family members are likely to be very offended if you show up in black, as that symbolizes mourning or that you disapprove of the marriage.

Don't take that chance. Try to find something else.

Also be sure to take sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, and a cover-up for the sun and wind.

Yes, I wore a black asian dress to my friend's wedding. Black is ok as long as you are not doing 100% black. So a turquiose handbag is good. Just as a precaution, I live in California and we both know that California has been very hot lately. Wearing black heats you up very quickly.

Most definitely! I went to a wedding two weeks ago and I wore a sleeveless black dress. It is a very classic and classy look. I am not too sure about turquoise pumps - I guess they would be okay if they have black in them or if you are also wearing turquoise accessories. Have fun at the weeding!!!

YES YOU CAN AS LONG AS YOU'RE NOT THE MOTHER OF THE BRIDE!!!! SINCE IT'S CASUAL GO FOR A MORE CASUAL SHOE THAN PUMPS!!!! TRY A OPEN SANDAL, WEDGE HEEL VERY CHIC NOW! TRY A FANCY SHAWL IF YOU LIKE THE DRESS UP LOOK REGARDLESS, LET IT MATCH YOUR SHOES AND BREAK UP THE DARK BIT!!! OR ADD A FLOWER IN YOUR HAIR TO GO WITH YOUR BOLD COLOR THAT YOU'RE ADDING TO YOUR DRESS! OR JEWELRY!!! BUT GO EASY ON THE COLOR AS YOU DON'T WANT TO LOOK TACKY!!!!
HAVE FUN COORDINATING THE ENDLESS IDEAS!!!

I wouldn't wear a black dress to a wedding. You could check with the bride, as to her beliefs or superstitions, it is her wedding. Try vintage shops for a sundress. Are there no Sears, Banana Republics, Macy's, near you? They all have sundresses, as do Target, etc.

Yes, absolutely - my wedding was on a yacht in Newport Beach and half of my female guests wore black (as well as the bridesmaids). It's very common in CA!

Definatly! Contrary to a lot of people's beliefs, and depending on the style of dress, black can be very classy and elegant. Whenever i dress up to go somewhere nice i always wear black. And, in fact, my bridesmaids in my wedding are going to wear black. It's going to be an elegant black & ivory wedding (regardless of my future in-laws' opinions that black is for funerals).

In short, go for it!
