I don't know the psychology of tailgaters, but it hasn't got anything to do with the bumper sticker.
There is a specfic group of people out there who live under the delusion that they are perfect and they live in the fantasy that since they have not had an accident, it must be true.
That simply isn't so. Yes, they probably are pretty good drivers, but the reason they haven't eaten the tail of someone is because they have just been lucky, so far, and I don't care how good a driver you are, if your attention is diverted for a split second at the wrong time, disaster awaits.
And of course, there are those who simply cannot stand for someone else to be in front. They have to be first!! At any cost!!
But I digress. No, they don't tailgate because of bumper stickers.

Todvango, well done for owning up to the little naughty of trying to read another cars bumper sticker. I'll own up to it too, sometimes its just frustrating not knowing what that sticker says.
However i do believe that while some drivers move closer to read these things, i doubt its the sole reason for tailgating. Impatience is usually the culprit.

I don't think it would have anything to do with your bumper sticker. They are probably just used to being jerks no matter what the back of your car said.
However, I will admit to pulling close to vehicles from time to time so I can be close enough to read stickers. But I try not to do that on the highway!
BTW - In case you didn't know, the '04 election is over. We appreciate you supporting a candidate, but you can take the sticker off now. ☺

My motto is "I brake for tailgaters". Now that I have a few more years of maturity on me I don't slam on the brakes anymore but I ALWAYS slow down if being tailgated. That said, I always drive in the right lane unless I'm passing another car.

People tailgate because they are ignorant a**clo**ns with no respect for the property or even the lives of others. My latest tailgater was too close behind me this evening, but there was steady traffic in all lanes on the road we were on, so there was no where for her to go even if I wasn't there. She was actually startled when I flashed my brake lights, and she slammed on the brakes! She never came close to me again.

I wanna find i bumper sticker that says:" If you can read this, GET THE **** OFF MY @R$!" (Excuse the caps). or a button i can push that makes my brake lights go on, without pushing the brakes.
Tailgating is one of the dumbest stupidist unsafe thing drivers do.
As to your question, maybe they do maybe they dont; if i see a bumper sticker in front of me, im not going to speed up so i can have a good look. Chances are, it proply wont be worth it.

no they tailgate because the person in front of them dosent care about making it through the light or into the next lane to go faster. but in your case with the sticker announcing to the world that you are one who helped our retarded president... it might be an issue. but it depends on your state i guess
