While grapefruit does have high levels of potassium in it, this is not why it shouldn't be eat while taking potassium supplements. Grapefruit and its juice inhibit the binding of many drugs with the Cytochrome P450 enzymes that they require to produce an effect. Grapefruit is highly reactive with several drugs and shouldn't ever be consumed while taking certain drugs. If the drug cannot bind the target enzyme, it will not produce the therapeutic effect that it is prescribed for. In fact, since the bioflavonoids and furanocoumarins bind the enzymes, the drugs are unbound in circulation and can cause an increased rate of absorption which could lead to toxic levels in the body. Grapefruit also weakly interacts with the uptake of ions (like Potassium and Sodium) by activating efflux pumps in the gastrointestinal tract.

there is potassium in grapefruit, and if you have too much potassium it is not good for your heart, also can cause kidney problems, there is only so much potassium you can have in your body and keep a healthy heart.if there is a reason you are taking it then i would ask your G.P.or health visitor for a list containing what foods are high in potassium.my husband has serious heart problems and has to stay away from foods which contain potassium, you will be surprised at the amount of popular foods that he has to avoid.I sugest you get a copy of these foods which will really help you. hope this is of some help.

Because grapefruit has a lot of potassium, and too much potassium can stop your heart. Bananas have a lot of potassium too.

Just a quick correction of the info. from the nursing student. She is confusing the chemical symbol for potassium (K) with Vitamin K. Potassium is a mineral and is NOT related to Vitamin K (phylloquinones).

Grapefruit has loads of Potassium, in and of itself. Potassium is also known as vitamin k. Vitamin K does two main things- it keeps the heart rate regular, and it controls the clotting of blood. Too much potassium/vitamin k will cause cardiac dysrhythmias (heart beat goes all funky) and hypercoagulation (blood clots VERY fast). A blood clot in the heart will eventually be dislodged by the force of the heart, and will travel to...
another part of the heart (heart attack),
the lungs (pulmonary embolism),
or the brain (stroke).

grapefruit, bananas, and many leafy greens have potassium/vit K, so be careful!
