God knows their heart. Your light shines if you have a relationship with God. You can tell them when you are saying to yourself Why the heck do they always have a smile on their face? Gods love will do that to you. Peace out..............

Ask them if Jesus is their Lord & Savior. This is an easy question, but people's answers reveal a lot.
Many people can go to Church and be religious, yet have not confesses Jesus Christ their Lord & Savior (Redeemer) & had heart faith in the Resurrection. Just asking certain questions will give you your answer. They might not answer it nor can say it, but they will say they were this denomination or that denomination. Being a denomination isn't being born of God. Or they were born into their parents church, etc...
Also, others answer that you can discern a tree by its fruit. The fruit of the Holy Spirit is faith, hope, love, joy, peace, patience, truth, etc.

Some people consider themselves Christian because they are born into the faith. I have a friend who is Jewish because she is of Jewish descent. I think what you may be asking is how to discern a practicing Christian from someone who says they believe in Jesus Christ? Post again if you have more questions. Arguably, a lot of people link themselves with Christianity and are anything but! Being Christian is more than going to church or calling yourself by that name. It does not mean someone is perfect, rather that she realizes how IMPERFECT she is. I think it means different things to different people but mainly being a Christian means wanting to be Jesus to people, accepting Him as your Lord and Savior and desiring to follow Him.

The Word of GOD says "They will know that you are my disciples by your love for one another." Christianity is about giving one's life as an offering to Jesus Christ, being devoted to HIm and obeying HIs commands. It is nothing that anyone of us can achieve perfectly, but a person's life is evidence of what is in their heart. Jesus is very very Good at changing people's lives, He has been doing it for the last 2 millenia. It should be clear from the change in a person's lifestyle that they have made a commitment to Jesus Christ.
THere is something....different, when Jesus enters a life.

Rude but I'll try to answer you anyway.
In a prefect world you would always know a Christian because they would be "your" idea of perfect. In the world we all live in it's harder, because Christian are people who believe in Christ as the Messiah. Through that belief strive to be the people he wants us to be following Biblical principles..but alas we are humans with feet of clay.

Jesus told His disciples the world will know you by the example you show. He told them to love one another. He told them to show charity and kindness. The two big commandments from Jesus were to Love God with all your heart and to Love your neighbor as yourself. Christianity is about love. If a person claims to be a Christian and doesn't show love...he may not be a christian.

That my friend, is why the bible says that by their fruits they shall be known. You can always tell an apple tree from an orange tree because you can see the type of fruit it bears, like wise true christians should follow CHRIST more so in living than in word.

You can't. The bible says that that is for god alone to determine. All those christians who disown someone who claims god as soon as he messes up are usurping god's personal privilege and committing a sin themselves.
