This is really bizarre. I was just emailing one of my college buddies about this. Go to www.annualcreditreport.com. You can select one free credit report from each of the three major credit bureaus each year. I recommend that you begin with Equifax. In about four months, go back to the site and select one of the others. In this way, you can monitor your credit for fraud or mistakes throughout the year.
Keep in mind, these free reports won't give you your credit score for free. Each of the major bureaus has their own proprietary way of calculating your score. They treat their mathematical formulas like they are the recipe for Coca-Cola (kept in the head of some geek that they lock in a vault at night). For a nominal fee and a year's subscription to Parents' Weekly you can get your score. Okay; I'm kidding about the useless magazine subscription.

Ah! For a free credit report, it's www.annualcreditreport.com, phone number: (877) 322-8228. Once there, you will be able to choose from Equifax, Experian or TransUnion (or 2 or all 3 of them). The best idea is to choose one, get the free report, wait 4 months, choose a second credit bureau, wait another 4 months and select the third credit bureau. That way, you will have a credit report every four months.
For a small fee, you can get your Credit Number from each of the credit bureaus, which is used to determine what rate you will pay if you seek a loan.
As identity theft is the number one crime in America, check your credit report carefully and seek correction to any errors within the time limit, about 30 days.
Good luck!
