i did opened the cover, still says the same thing also i have tried everything else all it says with black screen that cover is not open ... please some one help me out. the model is DCR HC 30.

You um, did remove the lens cap, right?

I used to have the same problem with my HC40. Now, I dont have this problem. I guess it was happening because of a loose connection. btw, there is a CCD recall on the LCD of you camcorder. Check sony's product advisory. Sony's quality has gone down the hill off late.

You may be in a low-light environment -- I kept getting the same thing when I was trying to record a thunderstorm at night. Maybe try recording in an area with lots of light. Or maybe that isn't your problem, but I just thought I'd throw my 2-cents in.
