I've heard from some people that dodge engines and transmissions don't hold up. Is there any truth to this? Are their any models better than others? Thanks

Hey master, don't talk **** to dodge man, obviously he is a better mechanic than you, did you ever stop to think that the stratus has given him good, reliable service? Have you every heard " If it aint broke, dont fix it?"

Ok, after that, I will say that dodge's transmissions have improved dramatically, I would say the worst tranny they has was in the 2nd gen 1500's, the problem is people never do any maintenance and then have their tranny burn up on the side of the road and complain. Now, their trannys are as reliable as any others, and, I do not know where you heard their engines do not hold up, the only engine they have had true problems with was the 2.7 in the dodge intrepids, the rest are pretty proven.

I remember asking this same question before I bought my SUV.
I currently own a 2000 Dodge Durango. Some folks use it to plow snow or to go 4X4ing. That's when the transmissions failed and they got this reputation. These trucks are a light duty trucks/SUB and weren't meant to pull stumps and plow snow.
My question for you is...are you looking for an SUV or a truck or are you looking at a car?

If you are looking for a car...I wouldn't worry...but always do your research. Look for reports from Consumer Reports or Car and Motor. They should be able to give you specifics on the make/model that you are currently interested in.

Oh and never go to a dealership alone. Take someone who is knowledgable and a good negosiator so you dont get a bad deal. And take your time. Don't get too excited and jump into something too quickly. There are always good deals around the corner. Hey maybe you can get two dealerships to compete over you so you can get the best deal possible.

GOOD LUCK!!

Dodge engines and transmissions are no worse than anybody elses and in some cases better than the competion.I own a 2005 300c and have had no mechanical problems 40,000 plus miles.I drive it rough occassionally to play with the other makes and hasn't let me down. Before the 300 I owned a cummins diesel powered truck and the same thing just do maintenance.hope this helps.

I've owned dodges, fords, and chevy's. If you do the regular maintenance on them, they all hold up well. My last 4 cars have been dodges with 2.2 and 2.5 engines. They all had over 200,000 on them when I sold them and they are still running. Sure , I replaced some timing belts and head gaskets, but their cheap if you can do the labor. Take care of them (any brand) and they will last a long time.

The transmissions did get a bad rep. around 10 years ago but now they are as good as any other. The key is good maintenance, and driving, do your oil & transmission fluid changes at the right intrevios. And don't drive it like you stold it.

My opinion is this: I haven't had much problems other than the usual wear and tear that you would normally encounter. Other than a timing belt, water pump, 1 head gasket, 1 tranny with the front bearing gone (at the 180,000 mile mark), and several clutches, I have had great luck with them.

i work for a car dealer and I have been seeing lots of problems with the transmissions in Dodges/.... still!!
We can't seem to get a Caravan with a GOOD transmission! They are all bad... late 90's Caravans have problems with even low milage vehicles.

Depends on what it is (car or truck) & who you ask. For someone who buys them new & wants to trade them in at under 100,000 miles they're probably fine. Probably the "Most reliable car" they ever had. But someone who buys used will really let you know whats going on. I've herd horror stories of HEMIs blowing up at 30,000 miles & Chrysler trannys in the VANS tend to fail at 70,000 in most cases. So what you buy is up to you; you dont have to listen to me. I just know the 3 chryslers we had in the family ALL had transmission problems.
