For land border crossings from Canada and Mexico, passports will be required starting January 1 2008. (It's likely that children will be exempt for crossings over land and by sea*.)
Q: Do I need a passport for travel to Mexico, Canada or the Bahamas?
A: No. But you must have a birth certificate or other proof of U.S. citizenship and proper ID.

I think you might need one to get back into the US though...not sure....
I am also not sure about the age either.
Try this website to see if you can find anything...

I believe you just need a form of identification? Maybe a birth certificate? I don't think being 18 makes any difference, as I used to travel to both Canada and Mexico with friends at 16 and no problems.
But, you may need a passport nowadays I guess. You should get one anyways, they are good to have.

The documents you need are birth certificates, drivers licenses (one of you must have one if you are driving) and notes from your parents with details on you travel plans, dates and how to contact them to confirm the plans.
1) Passports aren't needed to drive across the border until sometime next year. You only need it now if you are flying.
2) The bigger concern will be kidnapped children and runaways. As a minor you need permission from your parents to leave the country. Be prepared for more questions than usual, so the Customs Agent can figure out you aren't runaways.

If you are all underage, be prepared for a thorough grilling at the border. Customs looks very dimly at a carload of underage kids crossing the border, and they are going to suspect you right away of smuggling drugs. So you had better be squeaky clean!

They are not required if you are driving but they will be good to have.
Canada customs and immigration will be more interested in the purpose of your trip, and if you have sufficient cash and credit cards, and if you have verifiable lodging reservations.
