How early? Around 10,000 years ago with the advent of the first rudimentary farming practices, the sedentry life and accumulation of communities might've been the precurser to communal belief systems.
Much later native Americans adopted a very healthy belief in the worship of nature.
The Australian Aboriginals have believed in "the Dreaming" for likely many thousands of years, long before anything like monotheism was ever conceptualised.
The modern versions of christianity are a perverse conglomeration of all the greediest aspects of religion by comparison, but they don't believe in things this old, so conveniently deny due respect and recognition of the much more ancient belief systems still in operation today.

It is believed that the Babylonians were the first to establish pagan religion. Nimrod the King of Babylon was the first to say he was a god. When he died his wife Samarimus gave birth to a son named Tamuz. It is a long story but Samarimus claims Tamuz was the god son (the god meaning Nimrod). Latter on came Baal. Because science was limited and explaination for things were minimal they made up "gods" for to explain how everthing happened. This is how all the other religions apart from God in the Bible came about.

Polytheistic, animistic (everything has a spirit), probably female-centered. No one knows for sure, but logic dictates that early humans would visualize deity as feminine, since only females have the ultimate power of creation. (They wouldn't have understood the male's role.)

It can be traced back through the linage of the Prophets to the first Prophet Adam (PBUH).
Adam, Noah, Moses, David, Abraham, Ishmael, Jesus. and Muhammad (Peace be upon them all), is the linage of the Prophets.
