I'm a college student about to buy her first car. I was looking at a 2001 Eclipse, but lately I've heard from a friend that they were a money-pit. I wont have the resources to spend loads of money on mechanics, and I dont know a THING about cars. So I'm wondering if a 2001 Eclipse will make me go broke?!

there pretty good little cars ,but they are expensive to keep up,they told you right on that part of it,if its in good shape though it may not need many repairs, and if you fix things as they tear up, or before, if you can catch them before they cause lot of trouble, there not to bad to keep up,but there not as good if you don't have the money for repairs, and they can cause a lot of problems sometime, all cars can though,so the choice is yours on this one, good luck with it hope this helps.

Check out Consumer Reports book at library...every year they come out with a book that tells which model cars in certain price ranges and styles and model years are best bet for reliability and safety and fuel economy, etc.. Any used car is a crap shoot as far as having problems and costing lots of money to fix but some are more reliable than others and less costly to repair. Check to see how the owner maintained and drove it...have a good, trusted mechanic inspect the whole car, pull off the wheels and inspect the brakes, take it for a road test and see if there's any major problems.
Good luck.........Paul
