We are using 4 stakes to square 15 by 15 ft on the ground. I don't know the name of the tape measure we are using but it is wrapped up and and controlled by a handle. Can someone tell this in detail to me? I don't want to look like a fool doing this infront of everyone...

if you measure from corner to corner like an X they should be the same..... or using geometry... do a 3,4,5 triangle....... from the corner measure up 3 feet on one side, mark it... then measure 4 feet from the same corner on the other side, mark it.... then between the two marks it should be 5 feet... that will tell you if you have a perfect 90 degree angle.... it is the Pythagorean theorem, A (squared) + B (squared) = C (squared)... but it will only measure those two sides... not neccesarily a perfect square

a squared + b squared = c squared
(15 x 15) + (15 x 15)= 450
square root 450 = 21. 21 ft = 21 ft 2.5 in diagonal or corner to corner.
3 strings: 2 @15 ft and 1 @ 21' 2.5" make a triangle, stake the 3 corners then move the 2 15' strings to complete the square

use one common line to begin call it one side of the square place it where you want it then choose where the corner will be . now we are going to use a simple formula called an isosceles triangle its formula is 3,4,5 or any multiple there of 6,8,10, 12,16,20, and so on on your straight line from the corner that you established, measure 3 feet and mark that then at an approx 90 degree angle from the same corner measure 4 feet and mark. then measure from the first mark measure diagonally 5feet moving your two points back and forth so that te 4 foot and 5 foot intercect when these to points come togethewr you will have a perfect right angle

this is the basic formula we use to plot a house on apiece of land

To find out if your square ABCD, measure the diagonal lengths. The distance from opposite corners AC and BD need to be the same. If they are the same, you've proved the the corners are right angles, which in turns proves all four corners are right angles and you've got a SQUARE!

set your 4 stakes best as you can.. measure the distance corner to corner across like an X. distance should be the same both directions when it is square.

Measure corner to corner that will get you true square. I was a pile driver we had to make things perfectly square all the time also did alot of welding.

Multiply 15 by 15....I think that is what you are asking me...and that would be 225...15 squared is 225
