Bush is an atheist. He just doesn't have the balls to admit it because then his big oil and big business buddies would never have bought him the presidency.

Right now he would lose. That is starting to change.

And FYI: There is some debate about Lincoln. He wrote an anti-religion book when he was young that a friend talked him into burning for political reasons. Then he got in a weird place where his main abolitionist allies were religious, so he used their language all the time. It makes him REALLY hard to pin down. Most historic figures I have an opinion on. I honestly can't tell what he thought other than he wasn't a Christian.

They would in America, where there is a link between the church and the state. This was supposed to be abbolished a very long time ago, but here we are...

It would better not just to have an Athiest at these helms, but someone fully versed in the sciences, as currently almost all political candidates are graduates in buisines, economics and law, which is bad news for the environment and the pursuit of knowledge for all mankind, but is handy for achieving selfish personal gains.

No, and yes. No atheist president. And, yes, an atheist candidate wouldn't have a chance, at least, not in the near future. Notice how campaigns are run now, even the ultra liberals claim Christianity because they know otherwise they wouldn't stand a chance.

I personally believe that there has already been at least one atheist president likely more than one. Of course he could not declare this publicly or he would not have become president.
Americans are barely tolerant enough to accept one who is not a WASP as president.

Look at how many people have answered by accusing their least favorite candidate of being an atheist already. As long as "atheist" is still considered to be an insult, with people going on witch hunts to figure out who is a "real" Christian or not, someone who openly declares themself an atheist has a snowball's chance in hell of winning.

God, it'd be nice if there ever is an atheist President. The separation of Church and State is virtually nonexistant these days.

I want a scientist President. Someone who understands that we need to protect our planet and the life that is being choked away upon it right now.

Not a chance. It is hard to overcome prejudices. I am interested in how long it will take to actually have a woman president, or a black president. I think we will have a black president first (male) and then eventually a woman president. People feel uncomfortable with venturing outside of the accepted (historic) norm.

Not today.

But there were all of those nasty rumors about that candidate from Illinois.

Whatever happened to him? I hope he managed to do well in the election and not embarrass himself or anything.

And, no, I don't mean Obama.

P.S. Great Gatsby, Lincoln is in the same boat as Charles Darwin and Mark Twain. Lots of evangelicals who never met the man claim they were there when he converted, but everyone who knew him said he never did.

Even his wife.

Yes, there will be an atheist president once more Christians learn what the Bible REALLY says - that God tortured and killed millions and repeatedly commanded his followers to do the same. Suddenly, worshiping a heinous Hitler-God won't look so appealing.

I care more about the issues than what their beliefs/nonbeliefs happen to be. I would vote for an atheist if I thought they were qualified, just like I would vote for anyone else, gay, straight, buddhist, hindu, muslim, christian, etc
