Does anyone here have any experience translating/interpreting a different language? Interested in knowing fees, etc.

I speak, read and write in two different languages. More interested in knowing what fees to charge if I was doing it for someone else.

I'm thinking about going into interpreting. A friend of mine is a Russian-English interpreter (medical), and the company he originally worked for as an independent worker paid $21 per hour (was paid a 2 hour minimum for any assignment he took). I know that on weekends he was paid more too. He has since been hired by a hospital, so I know he makes more money there...probably depends on the company and demand of interpreters where you live. ; )

Well to get professional translations done for documents or business related stuff, it can be quite expensive.

In general, the less common the language, the more translation fees will command.

It's usually a per word type of fee charged for professional translations. There are a ton of websites offering this on the net, go check it out for yourself if you want particulars.

There's a big difference between getting a proper translation done and typing it in on babelfish.

Interpreters would just be hired as needed most of the time for different tasks. You'd pay an interpreter by the hour or job usually. And, just like translating you'll pay depending on the circumstances. If you get a job working as a Spanish interpreter at the local courthouse in Arizona you aren't going to make as much money as a Pashtu interpreter who works imbedded with American soldiers in Afghanistan.
