Originally, OCD was thought to be caused by brain abnormalities, genetic influences, and environmental factors. Though the exact cause had never been determined, the latest research shows that brain level dysfunction is the cause of OCD. This brain dysfunction is thought to be related to the chemical Serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that is thought to to play a role in anger regulation, aggression, body temperature, mood, sleep, vomiting, sexuality, and appetite. When this level is low, OCD can be a result.

Brain imaging, in a person with OCD, shows abnormal neurochemical activity...in layman's terms...abnormalities in the brain.

The best way to control OCD is via a medication that affects the neurotransmitter serotonin such as:
clomipramine
fluoxetine (known as prozac),
fluvoxamine (known as Luvox)
sertraline

There is strong evidence that OCD has a genetic component.

Scientists believe that OCD is caused by a shortage of serotonin in the brain.

OCD can be (not caused but) triggered by strep throat.

Research has shown:

1) Meds alone do not have a long term lasting effect.

2) Cognitive behavior therapy / exposure response prevention has a long term lasting positive effect.

3) Sometimes meds are combined with cbt / erp depending on the severity of symptoms.
