send of takke them flowers to their house so they can enjoy them! i always recommend flowers in a nice type of basket or tub that can then be replanted and kept growing. back in the 80's we were sent some when my grandfather died - we kept them for years!
you can also think outside the box -- when i have someone pass away - i send deli trays, sandwiches andthings like that - they are not in the mood to be cooking and need to eat!

Flowers for the funeral, but food for the house anytime....thats usually the best way to handle those situations. And consider a plant instead of flowers...flowers die but they can keep the plants for a long time and have the rememberance of it being about their loved one. Food wise, make something that can be frozen that they can keep for when all the hot, fresh food is gone....it shows that you were thinking about them longterm not just in the moment.

Where I live, flowers are taken to the funeral home by the florist. They are never taken to the relatives' home. And I think that a green plant would be much better than flowers.

For a close friend, you can take them to the house.
As to the previous answer, it is a well known custom to bring food for the greiving family. What ever you think they'd like, casseroles are good, just a one dish thing thay can eat when they are in the mood.

drop by the house and show you are a friend. take some comfort food -- get your mom to bake brownies or something if you can't yourself. if you are close to the family anything you can do for them would be appreciated so offering to cook a meal, clean up the house a bit, wash dishes, make a pot of coffee -- anything will be appreciated. flowers are appreciated but something personal will cost less and be more appreciated.
