They have answered that part of the question for most commonly used speakers; however, electrostatic speakers don't use a magnetic core.

The magnet has a field. When the audio signal, which is AC, goes through the wire wrapped around the magnet, it creates it's own magnetic field. Depending on the instantaneous polarity of this field, it moves the cone in or out. This is what creates the sound. If there were no magnet, there would be no movement of the coil, thus no sound.
