I think a better definition for "Christian" is someone who follows the teachings of Jesus Christ or is at least sincerely trying to do so.

Instead of concerning ourselves with what a few ignorant people say about our Church, we should focus on doing the best we can at being Christian.

After all, it's understandable why some get perturbed at the LDS Church since we believe the Church of Jesus Christ was restored to the earth through Joseph Smith, complete with prophets, apostles, and continuing revelation. We believe the Bible to be the word of God, but we have additional revelation to help us understand it better. That does set us apart from all other Church's claiming to teach Christianity.

It's OK to be different as long as what the Church is teaching is true. I for one know that it is.

Yes, mormons do believe in Christ but there is a common view of mormons as non-Christians. This is becasue their religion is founded later (I want to say early 1820's) and has a different set off doctrines that many believe to be "fake revelations." They also rely on completely different books (not that they don't have the Biblebut they also have other books) such as The Book of Mormon and the Pearl of Great Price. For some this makes them not Christian. There is also the common belief that Mormonism is based on false revelations, therefore the religion is false, therefore they are not Christian.

I can not state any other reasons outside of that.

I know you do, a group of Mormons visited me a few times where I used to live, and I have the Book of Mormon. But many dare to talk without the proper knowledge about it, the fact that they say you're not Christians proves it.

Though I think the mormons are quite different then conventional Christians they are still Christians because of the reason you mentioned. However, some Christians do not even believe Catholics are Christians so do not listen to these people.

Yes, Christians are someone who believe in Christ, and that Christ died for their sins. Evangelicals and Fundamentalists like to think they are the only ones who God knows.

In John 3:16, I believe that a false belief in Christ is not the same as correct belief. Could we then say that one is a Christian if he has the correct belief in the teaching of Sacred Tradition that Jesus is God. I believe that would be a reasonable understanding to have. I believe the Athanasian and Nicene Creed sum up very well what the right belief in Christ should be to call oneself Christian.

In Christ

It is good that mormons believe in Jesus, but they make Joseph Smith out to be more important. Mathew 6:24, "No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or selse he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon." (I know in that verse it is using money as an example, but it goes for anything that takes away from the glory of God and our focus on Jesus. I am using this from a real experience where a person asked a christian, "why are you always talking about Jesus. We have studies about Joseph Smith." I hate to say it but Joseph Smith is a false prophet. Read the last chapter in the bible.."For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book; If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book." Revelation 22:18-19.
Anyways, why does a mormon want to be recognized as a christian but still be called a mormon?
I totally agree with sawyer.

Actually, if you watch American Mormon and American Mormon in Europe, only people in the United States say we are not Christian. Almost all the people in Europe know we're Christians.
They probably think that we are not Christians because the refer to us as Mormons, not Latter-Day Saints, and the word Mormon does not sound Chirstian to the untrained ear.

if you believe jesus is your savior your a christian, that's all it takes. the rest is the same crap everyone pulls with religieon" when you disagree with it or it becomes inconveinient for you you interpret it on your own to fit your own beliefs and prejudices. hence brigham youngs' need to use the bible so he didn't have to follow monogomous marriage, or martin luther starting his own branch instead of swallowing his pride and changing the church from within. then again in his case he probably would have been killed as a heretic.
but as along as you believe in him your a christian. isn't that what he said??

Look at the hate literature distributed by other christians:

Of course, as an atheist I find all religion equally moroni. And the fact that christians keep fighting among themselves just goes to show it's false - would believers in a real god do that?
