I know the old advice, to just hang up. But, what if the call was a bit threatening, from a stranger?

Most phone companies will not place a trap on the line without a police report. So....

First thing you do is file a police report (include ALL of the applicable information). get the report number and contact the phone company to place a trap on the line. They should do it, unless this was just a one-time occurrence.

Notify the phone company. They will put a tap on your line and notify the police if it is necessary. The downside is they never tell you any information about it. But if it goes to the police, then the information is available to you.

You could also block that number from your phone.

You may want to think about countacting the police and making a report. At least someone on have a legal record that this is/was happening.

Report to the police, get Caller ID, tape the call, get a personal alarm and activate it in his ear, he will get a busted ear drum, ha! ha!

If you had taken your own advice the first time, you wouldn't have heard him threatening you.
Just hang up.
