a while ago, I went to the eye doctor, the doc said my degrees was 4.25 and that's really bad right? without my glasses, I have to be around 3-5 inches in front of a book to be able to read it. I want to have a degrees of 1 or 2 but I'm afraid of getting surgery. any other option?

Unfortunately you can't change the power (-4.25), that would require changing the shape of your eyeball. Contacts are the best option. There are contacts you can sleep in so you can see your alarm clock in the morning! Plus, if it doesn't work out it's reversible, surgery is not.

I agree with the glasses, pick out something fun, something you'll enjoy wearing. If it makes you feel better, -4.25 isn't that bad, there are people with powers much higher than that. Just take advantage of it any buy some fashionable eyewear!

Not that I know of.

My Husband and I have fairly normal vision. But our daughter has -7.75 and daughter in law is-8.50. One thing that people that are so profoundly nearsighted need to watch out for is any black spots or patches. This could be a detached or torn retina. This has happened twice in our family. The result can be blindness.

Fortunately contacts are better and glasses are so much thinner for these corrections.

Have you tried contact lenses? I am a licensed Optician and I deal with situations such as yours in a daily basis. Find yourself a really pretty pair of eyeglasses that make you feel confident and pretty (if you are a girl or handsome if you are male) and get yourself the thinnest lenses you can get (1.67 hi index) You can also try a reflection free coating to help you with glare. This is not going to reduce your nearsightness however, it will help you wear your glasses with more confidence.
