I have fostered many little dogs, and the yorkie-poo was the best. He only barked if someone came to the door, which is a good thing. He was sweet and gentle with my four little kids, never ever bit. If you get the pure breed Yorkshire Terrier, they can be snippy with little kids, go with the poodle mix, the hair is real like ours, doesnt shed, and stays short and wavy like a puppy cut. The jack russels and pomeranians bark a lot, and the westies too. I have had purebreds, the muts are healthier, and have a better disposition. Thats been my experience. Although I believe in shelter dogs, and I have one now, they require a lot of work from trouble in their past, but they also seem more grateful to have a home. If you have small children, be careful what you bring home from the shelter, I have had a couple of bad experiences from this. Had to take back two different dogs because they snapped. The funny thing is, the dogs act so well behaved the first week, then they get comfortable or something then get mean?
Do your research on the net about breeds, and take it all to heart, dont assume you can deal with a long haired dog if you really dont wanna have to brush it and bathe it all the time. Typically larger dogs are better with children.

The "small" part of your requirements you can't change. But, the other two are influenced by you. "Good with kids" means the dog has been socialized and you and it have been to an obedience school and the dog is reliable with all basic commands. "Does not bark alot" is an extension of the obedience training. All dogs can be trained to obey the "quiet" command.

I believe there are many of species of dogs that fit those traits you are seeking, however, it all depends on you and how you take care of it and raise it. Of course, the breed will have to be small. If you want it to not bark alot, you'll have to train it. If you want it good with kids aswell, you'll have to train it.

However, usual for small dogs, when around kids that play rough they tend to gain that behavior and will become aggressive.

Good luck.

So you are looking for a dog that doesn't bark. Yeah good luck with that. Try getting a cat.

I would look into getting a small dashchund. They have a multiple color now called "dapple" they are just beautiful. They are so cute even when they're grown up...they stay small size and they are so lovable. I thought I had a web site but couldn't find it. If you want it email me and I'll get it from my sister, I know she has it because she's still considering getting one for herself.
