The 2nd answer is right.

It dawned on me that you must not have an owners manual. So i took the liberty of providing you with a free downloadable one. Just click here:
http://www.motorcraftservice.com/pubs/content/~WOTEXP/~MUS~LEN/41/96expog1e.pdf

The diagram for the spare tire & jack will be found on page 301

If you have a hard time with the link, email me & I'll walk you through it another way.

You're welcome!

The under the bed spare tire carrier looks like it has never been let down, nor the spare ever used. When i bought it used, the tire and wheel were in the bed, so i used 2 bungee straps, and fastened one onto the top of the front of the bed and back around the tire, to the side rail. the other one goes thru the center hole in the wheel, and hooks under the bed rail. My truck looks ratty, but i like it that way! Thieves don't bother it! Another way is to use a piece of steel channel, weld a "foot" on one end, and make it bed side high. bolt it thru the floor, and to the side rail. Have a large bolt welded on the side of the channel, the height of a wheel hole, drill a hole thru one end, high enough that you can loop a chain around the tire, and lock the loop to the thru bolt, and that will keep it safe! If you desire a round steel plate can be drilled to go over the thru bolt, and then you can design a way to install a lock! the other way--use a Bias ply tire for the spare, and nobody will take it, since nobody wants or uses bias-ply tires any more! It'll be good enough to get you home, or to get the flat fixed!

I had 98 explorer . the spare tire release is located between the top of the bumper and the bottom of the lift gate if you look there you will see a small hole that's where you insert the rod and handle to crank it down , the handle and rod can be found under a flap at the back seat when you fold it down. I hope this will help.

you use a combo of lug wrench and jack handle, when assembled they form a speed wrench to lower the spare from it's cradle, the jack handle is under the rear seat and the lug wrench is with the jack in the left rear compartment.

Open the trunk lid-and it should pull back the back carpet-There should be a nut there to relase the tire.
