First I want to say that yes they are great companion dogs. However, If you do not have alot of time for training I would not suggest it. Also a fenced yard is a good idea because they are runners. If the door opens and you are not watching they will escape. and they will not come home till they are ready. On the training thing they are very inteligent but on the other hand they are very pig headed.(the most pig headed dog I have ever seen) Some of them can be a little skittish around new people but with lots of socilaztion they do loosen up a bit. But if they decide not to like someone they wont ever like them, On the other hand they never forget someone they decide to like and love. I would think long and hard on getting this breed because as lovable and likeable as these dogs are they require lots of training and like I said you need a fence.....If you are in they country and thinking it does not matter if they run free you must keep in mind that they highly resemble a fox and you take a chance of a farmer shooting them. Mine is not very car savvy and even stands in the road and makes traffic stop. Because he is the big *hit on the block and no matter how big the adversary he never thinks he will loose. I highly reccoment getting them fixed. They can be dog aggressive so socilization with other dogs is a must. Mine used to have the habbit of going and picking fights wiht the german shepherd next door and I had to let my shepherd bail him out more than once..... I have heard that they are hard to house train and that they never completle housebreak but my experiance is that is untrue.... although it was a long road he is completely house trained now. I hope this info helps and Like i said think about it because they require a little more time and disipline due to there free spirit and pig head attitude.

They bark little and bond closely with their handler while remaining independent. The Shiba Inu can be a wonderful companion for adults and older children, as long as the dog has been properly socialized (same goes for being around other dogs & cats). Socialization during puppyhood (and followed into adulthood) is VERY important, not only for this breed, but any breed of dog.

Here's a good informative website on the Shiba Inu breed:

i LOVE my shiba! however like many individuals mentioned, they are no longer for all people. Shibas are particularly cussed and really impartial thinkers. My shiba learns so quick, I taught her top 5 and different methods in lower than five mins each and every, however she'll handiest do them for treats or a gift. If she sees that she may not get some thing in go back, she'll forget about me. It will also be irritating regularly. They additionally ought to be on a leash constantly, they WILL run away. Mine may not dart out the door if it is open but when she's already external and he or she will get unfastened, she is going to run away. If she does that, I quite often run the opposite course and he or she'll chase me. They are particularly energetic puppies and ought to pastime plenty. A lot of shibas adding mine will flip your dwelling room right into a monitor and run round, bouncing off the couches and going below tables with lightning pace. One of the first-class advantages of proudly owning a Shiba is that they are customarily born potty knowledgeable. Of path you'll be able to have injuries however they are MUCH less complicated to potty coach them such a lot puppies. It's additionally most important to socialise them with different puppies, youngsters, adults and so on. at the same time they are younger, or else, they'll flip competitive. Anyways, all of the descriptions approximately Shibas are more often than not .. all of them have unique personalities and a few matters will not be actual for you. Shibas supposedly are not lap puppies however mine loves to put in my lap and he or she likes to play fetch. I would not alternate her for the sector, I desire you've as a lot a laugh with yours as I have mine! They particularly are quality puppies when you've got the time and persistence! Hope that is helping! :)

Apparently they are wonderfully entertaining, but HIGH energy and everyone I've met has had and aggression and dominance problem. That counts about 11 or 12 in 3 different cities.

Even in the description of their breed standards it says "any sign of aggression is a fault" - I guess they see it even in the ring?!

However, the agression as I understand it is limited to other dogs.

There use to be one in my neighbourhood, attacked a Belgian Shepard in my local dog park. Same one attacked my husky mix while both were on leash and passing on the street (my dog was about 6 feet away, length of Shiba's leash).

In my parents home town, one attacked a Great Dane and its sister tried to go after a Mastiff...

Guess they don't like bigger dogs.

Shiba's are awesome dogs. They do indeed need alot of attention, most can be rather independant and VERY noisey. If you wanted a smaller companion dog I wouldn't go for shiba's or any type of terrier. I'd get a maltese, shih tzu or poodle (please dont buy a "designer" dog). With a larger dog, a Golden, Lab, Aussie or Border Collie

Only if you have the time, energy, and resources to get a good quality animal, train it, socialize it, and do things with it regularly for the rest of it's life.
