I'd talk to your Vet. Don't self-medicate. I've seen dosage rates here that would kill your dog. Benedryl comes in different forms and strengths and should be based on the weight of your dog.

Any over the counter human antihistamine is appropriate for dogs, we use benedryl, claritin, and chlorpheniramine quite often. Call your vet to get a correct dosage based on your dog's weight.
Also, studies are showing that a large portion of the allergy symptoms are actually caused by skin absorption of the allergen, I recommend bathing your dog once a week with a hypoallergenic dog shampoo.

You have to be very careful giving animals any medication that has not been recommended by your Vet.
There is book out written by a D. Eldridge DVM called "Pills for Pets" That book gives infomation on what over the counter medications can be given to Dogs and in what doses for their size.

Give her Benedryl, the dosage is 1 mg per pound, but if she is over 44 lbs just give her 2 tablets. Call the vet and ask about dosage to be sure.

A friend of mine was told to give his dog children's dose of benadryl for seasonal allergies. My dog also has hayfever but I was told he should only have shots for it...

Baby Benedryl - the purple ones that are chewable. Break it up and cover with a bit of bread so she can swallow it. My dog has allergies, too, and my vet said it's safe.

I give my dog Benadryl (generic), which helps her some. The vet was giving my dog shots, which were inexpensive. However, he failed to mention it was a steriod, which is not good for the dog.
