If you fly, you need a passport now. You wont be able to leave the US without one.
HOWEVER, you are driving. US and Canadian citizens who travel any other way other than flying can still cross the border with a Birth Certificate and Drivers License.
Sometime next year the rules change. The date is unclear and changes, but soon you will need a passport. And when they do change, Canada will not let you into the country without a passport. The US will require its citizens to have a passport when they leave. There will be none of this juvenile notion of people leaving without a passport and not getting back home.

it is not a Canadian initiative easily, it is a US initiative. As of this summer season the US is requiring all persons who enter the US by potential of land, which includes Canadians, to have a valid passport. they are already requiring all who fly into the US to have passports and function been for a while now. extremely, the only reason Canada is requiring human beings to have passports whilst they enter Canada is so as that all of us comprehend that they a passport with them to get returned into the US. If we did no longer examine and make sure human beings had passports getting into Canada then relatively some us electorate or others could be caught right here because of the fact they could no longer get returned into the US. So, on a similar time as we don't like it the two, if somebody is to be blamed then look at the US government first. in the event that they did no longer require it to get into the US then Canada does no longer have had to alter it is regulations too and issues could save on as earlier.

You absolutely do need a passport. I visited my sister in Windsor, just across the Detroit River, for years with only a certified copy of my birth certificate and a driver's license. No more. Go to your local post office to get one. Or at least I can get one at mine. They cost a lot, but that's the price we pay to help deter terrorism. At least with a passport, you're covered coming and going. Trust me, you DON'T want trouble at the border.
Oh, and do not try to take any meats or plant life into Canada. They will be confiscated if they make you pull over for a search. Which isn't likely unless you look really suspicious. Or if they are having a random search day. I had an unopened summer sausage & crackers, you know just to nibble on as we drove, and a dwarf rose bush for my sister's birthday and lost them both.
Enjoy your vacation! (no sarcasm intended!)
**My guy at the post office just said I had to have one, he didn't say when the law went into effect and I didn't ask. Just assumed from all the people in there for passports, it was now.

Since you're crossing the border in a private car (not a chartered bus or train or airplane), you can still use your certified birth certificate and photo ID to get back in into the states. But as others have said, that is going to change soon so you might as well get your passport before the next big rush.

AMW is correct, the law went in to effect this year, you must have a passport to travel back and forth between the US, Canada and Mexico, a birth certificate/photo ID are no longer enough.

No - You will not be required to have a passport to enter/return from Canada until December 2007 IF arriving by car
What you have now is fine
If you arrive by air/sea - then you are required to have a passport
