I am a speech therapist. Below is a cool interactive developmental checklist based on age. At age 2 a child should be using 2-3 word sentences to communicate wants and needs. It sounds like he has a good start with receptive language (what he understands). I would just make sure to require more from him when he is requesting items in your home: hold up 2 things and have him ask for the one he wants (Want juice/ milk). By modeling 2 word phrases around the home, I'm sure he will pick them up quickly.

Its important to expand his speech. For example: If he can't open the door and wants to go out... reach for the door and say :"this is door... you say it...'door.'" ... before you open it! then next time expand to "open door." then "open door please"...etc.. you can expand any phrase... while looking in books instead of just naming an object in a picture "car" say "see car" or "go car go!"

I would definitely recommend a speech language evaluation. He should be saying more than 5 words... more like 50 recognizable words. At age 2 to 2 1/2 the number of intelligible words jumps to 200. This is a crucial time in his language development. Make sure there isn't a hearing deficit first (especially if there is history of ear infections!)

I think that's fine. All babies develop differently. When they say babies should be doing this by this age, it's only on average. Just b/c your child doesn't do something the same time as other kids, it doesn't mean anything. My daughter was "late" to crawl (mainly b/c I wouldn't let her on the floor where we were staying at the time..ick!) and "late" to have a big "vocabulary". I was a little concerned and her doctor said it was fine, as long as she did say some words. she never said "mama" or "dada" she started saying mom or mommy right off the bat. Anyways, we (me and the Dr.) started to notice, the older she got, the more "advanced" she was for her age. She always understood things more clearly than other kids her age, and if you were to talk to her now, you'd swear you were talking to a 6 or 7 year old (and even a 13 yr old at times, little miss attitude lmao). Not like "book" smart, just her mentality and all. So I wouldn't sweat it until you notice that he's not really grasping any other words and what not. Especially since "up" and "bye" and at different ranges than mama, ya know. I'd bet he's fine. Just give little man some more time and in the mean time, talk to his doctor for some peace of mind.

My older son was exactly the same way; it turns out he wasn't okay. I recommend you get your son evaluated by a pediatrician to rule out physical reasons like hearing loss. Get the pediatrician to give you a referral to a speech therapist and have him evaluated. How is/was your baby's demeanor? My son turned-out to be autistic (covers a very wide range of symptoms). If you can get any sort of diagnosis then you can get all kinds of different therapies for him, that can fix and/or reduce the disability, at little or no cost to you, via the Early Intervention program. You can find-out about the Early Intervention program in your area from the phone book or by telephoning your local elementary school and asking the special services coordinator for their contact information. Try not to worry. Good luck.

My son is two next month and just in the last week he has started taking off. My daughter is also two next month, she used to talk a lot, then she slowed down, and is starting to talk a lot clearer now.

I don't think that there is anything wrong with him. Especially if he understands what you are saying... He will most probably take off when you least expect it.

Good Luck.

PERFECTLY NORMAL MY LITTLE PRINCESS IS 17 MONTHS AND SAYS MOM, DAD, DOG, DOOR THEN MY FRIEND HAS A LITTLE GIRL THE AGE OF 20 MONTHS AND SHE CAN ONLY SAY ABOUT 2 OR 3 WORDS AS WELL, AT THE END OF THE DAY EVERY BABY IS DIFFERENT AND WILL GO AT THERE OWN PACE, EVEN IN SAYING THAT BABIES ARE QUITE CLEVER HE MAY KNOW ALOT MORE BUT JUST NOT READY TOO SAY IT.

yes, fine don't listen to all the negative talk, every child learns at their own pace, your child will say more when they are ready, and it sounds like he is doing great, i have 5 kids and some spoke a lot at that stage and some did not, but they all speak very well now and have no problems, well my 8 month old does not talk yet LOL, please don't stress, your child will feel it, and if you start taking him to a bunch of specialist he will think something is wrong with him, save the worrying til it is warranted

Definately okay, my son will be 2 this month, and in the last 2 weeks his speach has taken off. I was getting worried about him as well, but I think you are fine. If he doesn't start to progress over the next couple months, talk to a doc. :)

I would talk to his doctor because my 21 month old says tons of words and numerous sentences such as "hi, how are you?" "what are you doing?" "can we go bye-bye?" "I play outside?" and much more. His doctor may want to set up a speech-screening for him. Good luck with your little man!
