I have a friend who would like to transfer. Is it hard to do so? How long will it take? He's only been at the current base for a year or so....

Can't leave a stateside base after only a year. Not cost effective for Uncle Sam. There are occasional exceptions, but they are related only to hardship cases.

I don't know about the AF, but the Navy has command rotations that come about every 3-4 years. People can stay longer usually if they want, but he will need to finish his time at that base, probably at least another year or two.

Being in the military means you sacrifice personal wants for the greater good. I'm sure your friend understands that. If he doesn't, he won't last long in the AF.

my husband has been in 10 years....he hated his first stateside base and started trying to leave after a couple months there.......he ended up being there 6 years. the only reason he even left then is because he got an overseas assignment finally after begging for it all that time.

typically you must be on station for 2 years before they will allow you to ask for a transfer, and only if the Command is willing to gap the billet..most are not.

alternatively, they can do a no cost swap with someone who wants out of their current location.. but they must be the smae paygrade and have the same job code. and ALL costs associated with the move are completely out of pocket.

I've heard stateside assignments are now 4 years. Unless you are overseas in-balanced in your career field. I think you friend needs to just grin and bear it, or volunteer for overseas long extended. Overseas is much more fun anyway.
