Do I need to use Windows XP - Add or Remove Program - control panel to install programs? Every Windows XP user guide I've read says to use the control panel to install a program. The directions for any new program say just click on whatever Install program that came with the program, and makes no mention of the control panel. I think that maybe 10 years ago Add or Remove Program was necessary but can be ignored installing modern programs. I know removing a program often requires it.

No the software you are installing should have a built in setup file which is self executing and should start the install process on its own once the cd/dvd rom drive reads the cds files
