Generally, if I can, I face my icons. If I took note of which way east is and do not have them, then I face east. Otherwise, I just pray however I'm facing.

Any will do. What's important is the prayer itself, not the position of the person praying.

Supplication can be made facing any direction, and Allah knows best

God loves all directions but to bring unity into his believers he sets one favored direction so all align in unity.
