It can hurt him because he's likely to lick his coat at some point, and of course it will be bad for him to ingest it. I assume you mean motor oil? This can burn his tongue and throat, it's caustic. It could also burn his skin if left on, it needs to come off.
Dish washing soap is your best bet - you can also buy special cleaning products for removal of oil from skin but I just CAN'T remember what they're called! Soap the dog up with dish soap (it breaks down oil) and rinse THOROUGHLY. You may need to repeat a couple of times - usually it's when you're drying them you find the bits you've missed and then you have to get them wet again!
Dammit I was washing oil off a cat the other day, and I just can't remember what the darn stuff's called.

EDIT: SWARFEGA! That's it, that's what I used to wash the oil off the cat.

I've had to use Dawn dish soap on one of my cats. She walked across an oil painting of mine, and the oil was on her pads and in the fur between the pads. Make sure you work it in and get as much off as possible. I'm not totally sure about the seeping into the skin effects it may or may not have. But I know if the dog licks it, it can't be good for him.
Dawn is very drying to pet's skin, so make sure you don't overdo it. Don't wash the entire dog with Dawn, just where it's needed.

Dawn dishwashing detergent. Thats what they use in an oil spill situation. Don't get it in his eyes. You will have to repeat the bathing process at least three times to get it all out. Dilute the Dawn about half and half in water and it will penetrate the coat faster. Rinse throughly.

Use liquid soap, like for dishes. It will remove the oil, but make sure its a gentle soap like Dawn.

You should get the oil out as soon a possible because an infection can occur. You could possibly use vinegar, but I would check with your vet to get the best results.

it could hurt him that just depends on what kind of oil it was. try dawn dish soap and if that dosen't work try a degreaser shampoo for dogs. if all else fails take the dog to a professional groomer.

Depending on the type of oil it could make him sick as he licks it off. I would just cut that part of his fur off and be done with it. Unless he is some kind of show dog who cares what he looks like. He sure doesn't!

Use some go jo or dawn dishwashing liquid that would probably be the safest and it may cause harm to your dog if you leave it on if its alot.
