Because children are raised to follow the values that are ever present in their society. Christianity is the ever present religion in the USA, so it is the religion they learn about. If we lived in the middle east it would be Islam.
While it would be nice to have a religious tolerance (religious studies) course in Jr. High, something that spends a little bit of time on all the religions, I do not think we will see something like that in public schools because of the pervasive Christian community who would surly fight tooth and nail against it.
As for parents, most teach their children about their religion and raise them to follow it. Again the pervasive religion become the focus of the childs religious education.
Is it fair to think this is wrong? Not really. If a person wants to learn about another religion then the information is there, even in public school libraries. I think we should teach religious tolerance, and encourage more self education, that is probably the best we can do.

I think that if a person is gonna teach their child religion that they should teach all religions and not just one in particular. Unfortunately some people don't think that way and would rather have their kids grow up a certain way which in the end hampers and hurts the children later on in life as they aren't informed or educated enough on different religions and beliefs.

Having studied religions over sixty years, I have to say there is no way to study "all" religions in the schools. Also, the first time a child went home speaking of the Goddess Gaia to Protestant parents they would immediately begin protesting to every elected government officer and all media outlets.
They don't want their children to know there are other religions on par with Christianity.

There are far too many to teach ALL of them, but yes, I agree that children need to be taught about some other religions, the major ones and those they are most likely to encounter in their part of the world. IMO, a child is more likely to be proselytized away if they haven't been educated about other faiths.

Because if you do, you're stuck with a seriously messed up and confused kid.
As if the child has enough wisdom and discernment to choose the right religion. The kid's just going to pick the one that sounds the most fun.
And you can't be "open minded" and practice all religions. 1, because they don't cooperate. You can't follow all of them.
and 2, because open mindedness is nonsense. It's an excuse to believe in everything and commit to nothing.

Because if you are religious then your cult says you should not look elsewhere because the leaders who started that cult know that the more educated you become the less control they have over you and the more you begin to realize the foolishness of your teachings. So any religion that claims not to look elsewhere, like the use of first commandment reference in a previous answer, is a cult and is in fact attempting to control you.

We teach our children of the one true GOD and to be aware of the false teaching that are in the world. It is the knowing of right and wrong that is taught form childhood until an adult.
It is all in the owners manual; The Bible.

Funny, its when I went to college and studied studyingvarious religious systems side by side that I realized that they were all equally valid. Which is to say that they were all full of crap. Buddhism had some good points but even that has devolved into superstition in many sects.
Why don't parents teach their kids about all religions and then let them choose? The first rule of brainwashing is to restrict information.

One cannot follow but one path......
There are many paths, but when the feet go forward, the mind will be fixed on the one which will take him where he needs to go.....
If that one should return to the fork in the road, it simply means that he was confused on his way........
If taught about all the roads, he will be confused when he comes to the direction by which he will go......
He will learn which way is right to him and when he has come to that road, will know the way..... whether it is good for his mind or whether it is bad.....
To teach all the ways.... is to confuse him..... one cannot lump all the ways into a great teaching..... when coming to those roads, they will all seem right..... but will not easily be labelled because they are of one understanding...
How confusing!!!

Ginger
