God does want us to know for sure. This is why Jesus is God in the flesh, so that we could see what God is like from knowing him, and know that He exists and loves us.
But your other question is why faith is a good thing. It's like this -- it doesn't take faith to know that 2 + 3 = 5. It can be proven, and anyone can know it -- all it takes is the ability to count. Belief and faith are like having a relationship with a person, not like simply knowing some collection of facts which are either true or not true.
How do you know that people in your life love you? Can you prove it like you can prove 2+ 3 = 5? No. But you can listen to them, and think about what they say, and observe what they do, and tell them what is happening in your life, and by this you can know them.
Knowing a person -- or a Person -- is not at all the same as knowing 2 + 3 = 5.

Faith is the beginning...God can't work with you, help you grow, and be what He has planned for you until you move an inch toward Him in faith. Once you can take that step or ask God to help you take that step (you have to have a grain of faith to talk to Him), your life will begin to change. God in your life causes you to see life in a different light and to seek better goals for yourself. So many things lose their appeal and you don't even have to fight to let them go. Find a church where you see work going on to help people and you will learn much there. Bless you.

lI can say faith is a gift, and its easy to see those around you that don't posess it. It slows you down and you have a confidence of peace amist the confusion of the storm. I personally have noticed my husbands faith has emensely grown, he has gained a loving peaceful confidence and he is much quicker to smell the roses in life and doesn't much minds the weeds. Its a very nice place to be!

God wants us to trust his holy, good character. He can try to prove to us every detail of our life. In the 1st chapter of Romans it says that there is already enough proof of his existence in nature that man is without excuse if they do not believe.

At least in many cases I looked (I have not looked at evry case yet), faith also includes the concept of trust.
