most of the time man's internal state is empty.

really there is nothing in it most of time, but maybe that is why you are thinking that there is something in it ?

I am a Christian, raised in the Protestant faith, now belonging to a non-denominational church. Yes, I believe in hell because I believe in heaven. I'm assuming you have a bible. So check out these passages: James 3:6; Luke 12:5, Matt 23:33, Matt 18:9, Is 14:9, Prov 27:20, Prov 23:14, Prov 7:27, Ps 55:15, Ps 9:17, Rev 20:14, Rev 1:18, Acts 2:27, Luke 16:23, Matt 16:18, Matt 11:23

Well, I would say man's natural state is dualistic, and so those one-ended sticks you describe don't seem to fit. We like to think there is a natural state of man that we haven't attained naturally: something that we can shoot for as a goal, but basically man is already expressing his natural state, which is good/evil, happy/sad, loving/hateful.

It has always been the case throughout history. Man cannot help but naturally express his natural state. All that changes is the means of that expression, and hopefully at least a slow, relentless evolution away from his own ignorance.

If that is our natural state then why must we struggle so to get there? There is no wonder, intuition or movement that will lead to ecstasy except what is provided us by God.

This man you speak of, who is he? Not self, not other. Today the trees are preaching the Dharma, tonight there is a light in pitch black darkness, and later on, who knows? ~ : )

Yes. Unfortunately we have to overcome our suffering before we get there but absolutely these would be our inherent states.

Yes, I feel like I am "the real me" when I'm full of love... but when I'm in a bad mood, somehow that's not the "real me".

I am what I am, and you have to accept me warts and all.

Simply because I am a soul in disguise.
