you do not ask God for something without working for it.
I can't say to whom i went first cause there is no way for comparison here, the Lord was, is and will be with me each and every minute... i did not think about it, the doctor is just a mean that the Lord can use to help me that's all. I understand your question though, depression can cause pessimism but for me it was not as much as to make me forget about my highest beliefs. so when i got depressed, i went to the doctor but not without having the Lord with me all the time.
Hope i answered your question..

I am a paranoid schizophrenic. I also have had depression brought on mostly by military service and praying. I was suffering from hearing voices in about 1965 and prayed with a thought prayer for help asking specifically "What should I do?". A very loud chorus of male voices answered almost immediately with the words, KILL YOURSELF! That put me in the hospital. I have been a mental health outpatient for over 40 years on neuroleptic medications. I no longer hallucinate but still religiously take my medications.

I ask you in a return question, "How can I ever trust praying to God again after that and other hallucinations?"

Good health, peace and love!

If you are clinically depressed the biochemistry of your brain needs to be adjusted. This can only be done with medication.
God can do absolutely nothing about clinical depression because God cannot not alter your brain chemistry.

Left alone, that is without drugs, clinical depression can resolve in 6 months or so. But why suffer when you don't have to?

I suggest you go see a psychiatrist and get evaluated for clinical depression.

I suffered from clinical depression and I know how very painful it was for me. Taking anti-depressants bought my brain chemistry back to normal and I felt 1000's times better.

Good luck!

I have severe anxiety and depression and prayed a lot about it.This helps in some ways but I still went to the doctor and got antidepressants. Some times I think god will have you go through things for a reason and the path(doctor praying however you deal) you choose is part of gods plan to help you grow spiritually and as a person. So I guess I choose a combo of both but spirituality is definitly very important.Hope that makes sense to you.

Hello. I have never been diagnosed with depression. But if I was in your shoes, i would go to Jesus Christ (Lord). Because Jesus is our best friend, he loves us. He can helps us go through anything. We just have to pray, talk to him, ask for his mercy. And he will answer your prayer (questions). He has a good heart. I believe that everyone should have a heart like Jesus. He gives us peace. It's important to spend time with him every day and enjoy every moment of piece that he gives you.

GOOD LUCK!!!!

Doctor first; Lord years later.

If I had to do it again, I take the problem to both at the same time.

Depression is an imbalance in brain chemistry, so let the doctor do what the Lord called him or her to do.

Sure. I went to the Lord for years first... at least until I was old enough to take myself to the dr. But that's because my step-mom was a religious freak that thought I'd be cured if the preacherman was kind enough slap me in the head and yell profanities at me in Arabic.

Do both. I have worked in psychiatry for a number of years. Medicine helps and is very important to treatment but I have noted that people with faith seem to mend faster. One in four people have depression...not uncommon and not to be ashamed of.

The doctor.

If you wait for the Lord to help you, you'll wait forever. The Lord will only help you if you do something about your illness. It says so in the Bible. He helps those who help themselves.

I did and I got help. I got better.

i have bipolar disorder. first i tried exercise, lifestyle changes, and getting closer in with my faith (wicca). after i realized that these helped but weren't solving my problem, i went to the MD and he hooked me up wtih meds that work for me.

i think meds are a great gift and should be taken when needed.

your case may vary. maybe you're worse than i was. in that case, head to the MD first and get the drugs in your blood, and then do your lifestyle changes and religious stuff.
