I was raised a hellfire and brimstone Baptist. However I can honestly say I never believed what was being put before me. I was 10 when my younger brother and mother went to the front of the church to say they accepted the word of god as the binding of life (this church did not teach new testament only the old) and I refused to do it. When I was 12 I walked out of my own baptism that my mother was forcing me to have and when I was 15 I walked away for good. None of the Sunday school teachers nor the reverend could answer my very legitimate questions about their version of christianity and I was told to stop asking.
To me any deities are unproved entities because there is no empirical proof they exist. I do not pay attention to them in the least in my daily life, I put my faith in humanity instead.
As far as death, both my parents raised me to believe that was a natural part of life and nothing to fear. Since I do not believe in any type of afterlife it is the end and that I do not find scary or sad in the least; if I have lived a good life and have people who remember me with love and happiness then what more should I want?

I'm sorry, but why should the world comfort you? Are we so special as a species that the universe owes us a security blanket? No, no one would lay down their lives denying God. And it's people like you who would that blow up 10 Downing street fighting protestant vs. Catholic. Are you content knowing that Hitler's in Heaven, because he was a Christian and likely repented upon his death?
I would lay down my life for my love, my sense of self worth, and the rest of the people in this world. I don't believe in an afterlife, so that's saying a lot. You believe if you die you'll keep going, but I don't, so my life is infinitely more precious to me. It's all I've got. Would you be willing to give up your place in eternity for your family? Because that's the commitment I make to my family.
Ask yourself, who of the two of us knows love more? You who would go on no matter what, or me who has to value all that life has to offer because it's all I've got?
(sorry if that sounded harsh, you just got my goat with this question.)

I never asked anything of the god I believed in except the opportunity to serve. I am not now an atheist simply because I didn't feel my prayers were answered -- I had lots of opportunities to serve, and I took full advantage of him.
And what does comfort have to do with the truth?
There's a lot about the universe that makes me uncomfortable. The structure of my skeleton, for example, currently has me in excruciating pain, but that doesn't mean I'm going to stop believing I have a skeleton just so I can pretend I'm not in pain.
I don't believe in a deity any more because it's trivially easy to prove there isn't a deity of the theistic nature.

Some people say they were christians all their life, grew up a certain denomination or group, was a christian until they left God,etc.
Jesus himself made it clear no one was born with salvation:
You must be born again (John 3:16)
For those who laugh and mock Jesus' offer of forgiveness by His shed blood will bow and confess Jesus is Lord when they stand before HIM.(why wait till it's too late?)

Once when I was alone in my house, I was convinced that I felt the presence of a ghost.... but it turns out I was just being silly.
You can get feelings (of any kind) but you can't be sure 'who' or 'where' they are from.
Obviously God has failed somehow, otherwise I would not deny him. He needs to try harder. It's not my fault I can't accept something without proof.

true, how is it comforting if they think there's nothing after this life. kinda ridiculous. do they think the world just goes on and on. no way that it can at this rate. there's too much evil, i can't express that enough. sometimes i wonder when is it gonna be over but i know it's not in my time only in God's.

I didn't turn my back on god, any more than I turned my back on Santa Claus. I simply realized he didn't exist.
And I wasn't happy to discover that. I was happy believing in god, just as I was happy believing in Santa.
But there was no trauma that made me hate god or anything like that, honey. Those are lies that your church has told you about atheism.

The fact that you fell comfort from your religion is no more to the point than the comfort a dunk feels compared to a sober man, though alcohol is real.
