I may have to take in a Cairn Terrier puppy (lest he end up in the pound)...I already have a handicapped cat (cerebellar hypoplasia) so I am worried that with this being a terrier breed, he may be inclined to chase my kitty who really wouldn't be too good at running away. My kitty's comfort comes first, but I have a ton of experience with dogs. Can I train a dog to just kind of leave the cat alone? Any tips for socializing a puppy with a cat?

While cairns are a bit less scrappy with other dogs than other terrier breeds, they still have a strong chase and seize instinct. Not a good choice with a cat. However, all dogs are individuals and this one may be trainable.

Introduce them in adjacent rooms with a baby gate in between so they can see and smell each other. If and when the puppy seems ok with the cat, let them in a room together supervised. The cat has to have a way to escape and somewhere to go whenever he needs to get away from the dog.

okay well cairn terriers were orginally bred to hunt rants in the tunnels of scotland . so they have a strong prey drive and they will chase the cat . but you can teach the cairn about leaving the cat alone . they are very smart dogs i had one for 11 yrs and she was a joy until her untimely death at age 11. it still breaks my heart to this day . they grow there you know . good luck .
